Meet Raffety

Raffety is a 7-year-old student at Cambridge Primary School, who discovered a new passion through the Tim Henman Foundation community tennis programme, funded by the LTA Tennis Foundation. His mother, Kelley-Anne, shared how this unexpected interest in tennis has positively impacted his life.

How it started

Raffety had never shown any interest in tennis before. That changed when he came home one day, excitedly sharing that he had enjoyed a tennis lesson at school. This was his first time playing, and it sparked a newfound enthusiasm.

Kelley-Anne recalls how Raffety’s excitement led them to take advantage of a discounted offer for half-term tennis camps at Aldershot Tennis Centre. To her surprise, Raffety seemed to know everyone there, greeting coaches and fellow campers alike. This immediate connection was a testament to the positive environment fostered by the programme.

More than tennis

The benefits of the programme extended beyond tennis skills. Raffety, who often struggled with attention and preferred active play over classroom learning, found a productive outlet for his energy. The structured yet playful sessions helped him focus and build confidence. He also formed new friendships, having a positive impact on his social skills.

Raffety’s enjoyment of tennis stems from the fun, game-based approach of the sessions. Kelley-Anne noted that he doesn’t see it as a sport yet but as a series of enjoyable games. He has learned various tennis moves, such as forehand, backhand, and volley, impressing his mother with his progress.

Raffety’s journey from a novice to an aspiring tennis superstar highlights the importance of providing diverse opportunities for children. Kelley-Anne believes that such programmes are crucial for channeling children’s energy and helping them discover new interests. For Raffety, tennis has become more than just a sport; it’s a source of joy, learning, and personal growth.

We play lots of fun games! I like running around and dodging in ‘cross the river.’ It’s fun and makes me happy. I want to be a tennis superstar and champion when I grow up!

Raffety’s story is a testament to the transformative power of sports programmes in schools, showing how they can ignite passions and build essential life skills in young children.

What the LTA Tennis Foundation funded

The LTA Tennis Foundation has awarded a grant to the Tim Henman Foundation to deliver its Community Tennis Programme, which aims to open up tennis to more students.

The programme includes five key elements:

  1. Regular coaching on-site for every student (in line with LTA Youth Start lesson plans).
  2. Rackets in hands (through LTA Youth packs)
  3. Ensure tennis is sustainable at the school through teacher training
  4. offer students the chance to continue their tennis journey at a local club
  5. with the additional benefit of inspirational mentor workshops delivered at the school

Running in line with the academic year, the programme is delivered in multiple schools chosen based on the percentage of students on free school meals and the level of deprivation in the area, ensuring it reaches those with the greatest need. The programme is delivered to the same group of students for three years, providing consistency for both students and schools.
