Director of Tennis at Highgate Cricket & Tennis Club
Development Objectives, Responsibilities and Priorities
The current Director of Tennis has worked with the club to offer a coaching pathway for all members. This is the cornerstone of the club's ethos of affording everyone the opportunity to be 'the best they can be'.
The new Director will be asked to continue and build on this undertaking.
Key measures of success include:
• Working with Tennis Committee to energize, administer and improve the
coaching structure and programmes in line with the ethos of the Club
• Managing the overall junior and senior programmes to generate budgeted
turnover and net profit
• Providing a thriving adult coaching programme for all levels of player including
supporting the adult teams with selection & training
• Supporting the Performance Tennis Manager to deliver the junior HPT
programme and demonstrate HPT player progress
• Growing player numbers in Junior Club (HT) sections of the programme
• Growing the camps programme throughout the year
• Developing the schools programme and links in the local community
• Running clubs in LTA Youth
• Work with parents, coaches and volunteers to grow junior ‘club’ participation
Diversity Equity and Inclusion
The club has an active working group dedicated to promoting the values of diversity equity and inclusion at the club. We have a thriving programme of outreach involving visiting local schools with free coaching for economically disadvantaged children; inclusive tennis coaching for impaired vision, para standing and wheelchair players; subsidised coaching for children of refugees; an annual Pride event; and a regular social session for the LGBTQIA+ community.
Coaching Structure
The Director of Tennis oversees the whole development and coaching structure
and will manage a team of 5-6 coaches, a competition organiser plus coaching
assistants. Coaches are contracted to deliver a minimum number of coaching hours for the programme as well as being allocated courts for private coaching. The coaching team also runs junior holiday camps for 10- 12 weeks of the year.
Situated in a beautiful location, between Crouch End and Highgate, in north London, Highgate Cricket & LTC is surrounded by other cricket and tennis clubs who are all part of the Shepherd’s Cot Trust. The club is a friendly, inclusive, community club with 13 courts (10 floodlit), with 3 new artificial clay courts planned to be ready in the late Spring of 2025.
We have a very busy all year-round coaching programme, with 430 adult and 330
junior members. The Club has a junior performance programme managed by our Performance Tennis Manager which includes strength and conditioning training. We also have a thriving programme of outreach running clubs in local schools, LTA Youth sessions at the club and inclusive tennis coaching.
Key Skills and Abilities
The successful candidate will share the Club’s passion for tennis and be able to
communicate this to existing and potential club members of all ages. You will have
the ability to develop and nurture successful relationships with your coaches and
colleagues, other clubs, schools, LTA, Local Authorities and community partners.
A creative thinker, you will need vision and the ability to operate strategically. You
will have excellent leadership skills with the ability to manage change and adapt
services to meet the evolving requirements of a dynamic club environment. You
should have good team management skills, strong commercial acumen and financial capabilities and, above all, enthusiasm.
Specifically, you will have experience and success in coaching team management
with the ability to lead, develop and support the coaching team at individual level
and as a team in order to develop the best coaching team possible.
Contract Terms
The contract will be a self-employment contract for 2 years based on the LTA
Coaching Services Consultancy Agreement for 15 hours per week coaching time. In addition, there will be court allocations for a minimum of 15 hours private coaching per week plus off-court responsibilities of 10 hrs per week.
Start date: April 2025.
Qualifications, Experience and Personal Qualities
Suitable candidates will have the following:
• Coaching qualifications LTA level 4 or equivalent
• Outgoing, dynamic personality, relating easily to adults and children
• Proven experience in managing aspects of both adult and junior coaching
programmes and coach development
• Experience in running a coaching business, from managing coaches to
planning and implementing marketing programmes
• Proven track record in performance player development and performance
programme development
• Good digital marketing skills
• Reliable, punctual and enthusiastic approach
• LTA Accredited+ & Current DBS and First Aid certificate, or equivalent
Highgate particularly welcomes applications from coaches who competed or still
compete at a high level and are willing to bring energy, drive and passion to play a
full part in the life of the Club. The current DoT is playing for the club in team
matches and the new DoT would be welcome to join at their level if needed.
