Business Manager - Hallamshire Tennis & Squash Club
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This position serves as a joint Senior Manager of the Club (alongside the Operations Manager), with key responsibilities for member-facing interactions, business administration, and assisting with business planning.
- Provide direct line management for the Front of House Manager, Finance Support, and Business & ICT Support, overseeing all HR matters and ensuring effective leadership and guidance.
- Oversee all financial operations of the Club, working closely with the Club’s accountants. This includes full accountability for budgeting, cash flow, profit and loss (P&L) management, and overall fiscal oversight, with assistance from the Finance Support.
- Lead all internal and external marketing and communications initiatives, including membership campaigns, newsletters, branding, website management, social media, and general Club communications.
- Develop and manage relationships with the Club’s sponsors, establishing strategies to enhance revenue and build long-lasting partnerships.
- Assume full responsibility for the management and growth of the Club’s membership base. This includes overseeing the application and renewal processes, member recruitment and retention strategies, conducting satisfaction surveys, and generating relevant reports.
- Lead business planning initiatives, including the development of a long-term strategic plan and vision for the Club, in collaboration with the Board.
- Ensure full legal and regulatory compliance, including managing affiliations, insurance policies, GDPR adherence, and other necessary regulatory requirements.
- Oversee all aspects of human resources, including policy development, recruitment and retention, staff development, cultivating a positive workplace culture, and monitoring employee performance.
- Improve and oversee the ‘customer experience’ and member satisfaction levels, in collaboration with the Operations Manager and Front of House Manager.
- Oversee and manage all member-related issues, including handling complaints, addressing concerns about behaviour, and ensuring that all matters are resolved professionally and in line with Club policies. Engage with the membership and maintain a visible presence within the Club, contributing to a warm, welcoming, and open environment where members feel comfortable voicing their feedback, and their views are actively considered.
- Manage procurement and oversee purchasing decisions, including oversight of all contracts, to ensure operational efficiency and cost control.
- Work closely with the ICT & Business Support to oversee all aspects of ICT, including repairs, renewals, and planned enhancements to the Club’s systems.
- Attend board meetings as required, prepare and present relevant reports in advance, and participate in committee meetings as needed.
Serve as an out-of-hours emergency contact (shared with the Operations Manager) in the event of a serious incident.
- Be the responsible person on-site, alongside the Operations Manager and Front of House Manager, to address day-to-day operational matters, carry out compliance checks, and handle emergencies as needed.
- Participate as part of the Club’s safeguarding group, acting as a point of contact in the absence of the Safeguarding Lead.
- Perform other duties as required and agreed upon.

Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Higher Education: While higher education is preferred, it is not essential for this role. Candidates with degrees or certifications in business administration, management, finance, or related fields will be given preference.
- Management Experience: Prior experience in a managerial or leadership role is highly valued. Candidates should demonstrate a proven track record of effectively leading teams, managing projects, and achieving business objectives.
- Relevant Courses or Qualifications: Additional certifications in areas such as project management, business strategy, leadership development, financial management, operations, marketing, or human resources are advantageous.
- Required Certifications: Candidates must hold or be willing to obtain the following:
- First Aid at Work (Level 3)
- Food Hygiene Safety (Level 3)
- Health and Safety (Level 2)
- Appropriate Safeguarding in Sport certification
