Day five: Nicholls & Mihalikova exit in consecutive WTA 1000 quarter-finals
Olivia Nicholls and doubles partner Tereza Mihalikova bowed out in the quarter-final of the Wuhan Open against Ekaterina Alexandrova and Katerina Siniakova 7-5, 6-4 in an hour and 39 minutes.
This was the second straight WTA 1000 women's doubles quarter-final that the British, Slovakian duo have reached in the last two weeks, having also exited at the same stage in Beijing.
Nicholls and Mihalikova overturned three breaks of serve in a gutsy opening set against Alexandrova and Siniakova. However, it was a difficult match on serve for the duo - winning just 48% points off their first serves - and a fourth break at 5-5 was all it needed for their opponents to eventually take a one set lead.
The British, Slovakian team had led 2-0 at the start of the second, but again were unable to build any momentum on serve. In a set that saw 11 break points between the two teams, Nicholls and Mihalikova came out on the wrong side - with Alexandrova and Siniakova winning the final three games from 4-3 down to close out the match.
Nicholls could be set for another career-high ranking this week - currently sitting at No.40 in the live WTA doubles rankings.
Olivia Nicholls has made it back-to-back WTA 1000 quarter-finals after she and doubles partner Tereza Mihalikova breezed past Wang Xiyu and Qianhui Tang to reach the last eight.
The British, Czech duo needed just one hour and eight minutes to secure a 6-1, 6-2 victory over the Chinese pairing and set up a quarter-final clash against
After reeling off the final five games of the opening set, Nicholls and Mihalikova continued to ride the momentum early in the second as they clinched an early break. Despite facing four break points across the match the British, Czech pair served their way out of trouble - winning 76% of points when they landed their first serve (75%) to escape the match unbroken.
A second break late in the set was all that was needed for Nicholls and Mihalikova to cement their spot in the quarter-finals as they closed out a dominant win with a hold to love.
The British action has begun at the last WTA 1000 event of the year in Wuhan, however, it wasn't meant to be for Katie Boulter who was knocked out by Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko in the opening round.
The British No.1 was beaten 6-2, 7-5 by the world No.96 in an hour and 52 minutes.
Boulter was on the backfoot from the off as she trailed 3-0 in a whirlwind opening set that saw six breaks of serve. The Brit failed to hold serve in the opening set and won just 47% of points behind her first serve, as Tsurenko went on to take the lead after 43 minutes.
While Boulter appeared more settled in the second, it was the Ukrainian who dealt the decisive break late on before sealing the victory on her second match point.
Over in the doubles draw, Olivia Nicholls and Czech partner Tereza Mihalikova brough the form that took them to the quarter-finals of the China Open into their opening round contest in Wuhan.
Nicholls and Mihalikova kick-started their campaign with a 7-6(3), 6-3 win over eighth seeds Sofia Kenin and Bethanie Mattek-Sands to reach the round of 16.
The British, Czech duo broke all-American duo five times across the one hour 39 minute match before closing out the victory on their first match point.
Next up, they'll face the Chinese pairing of Wang Xiyu and Qianhui Tang in a bid to make it back-to-back WTA 1000 quarter-finals.
