• 3 MINUTE READ

The NEC Wheelchair Singles Masters and UNIQLO Wheelchair Doubles Masters is upon us once again this month, with seven days of competition for the ITF’s end-of-year wheelchair championships.

The prestigious tournament brings together the best players in the world to battle it out for the coveted titles across the men’s, women and quad divisions.

Find out who’s playing, where to watch and everything else you need to know about this year’s Wheelchair Masters.

When is the Wheelchair Masters 2024?

This year’s NEC Wheelchair Singles Masters and UNIQLO Wheelchair Doubles Masters get underway on Monday 11 November.

The finals of the men’s, women’s and quad doubles events take place on Saturday 16 November and the men’s women’s and quad singles finals on Sunday 17 November.

Where is the Wheelchair Masters 2024 being held?

The NEC Wheelchair Singles Masters and UNIQLO Wheelchair Doubles Masters will take place at the Sportpark Molenbeke in Arnhem as the year-end championships are held in the Netherlands for the second time in three years.

The Singles Masters has previously been held in Great Britain on several occasions - in London from 2014-16 and then at the Loughborough Tennis Centre in 2017.

Five Brits line up for the ITF’s year-end wheelchair singles and doubles championships this year, with Alfie Hewett, Gordon Reid and Andy Lapthorne all contesting the Singles and Doubles Masters, while Greg Slade and Andrew Penney will both contest the Doubles Masters for the first time.

Singles Masters

Hewett won the first of his three Singles Masters men’s titles on home soil in Loughborough in 2017 and he regained the title in Orlando in 2021 before again claiming victory in Barcelona in 2023.

The world No.2, also the runner-up in Orlando in 2019 and in Oss in the Netherlands in 2022, will once again be the second seed for the men’s singles this year behind Japan’s Tokito Oda, the player Hewett narrowly lost to in the Paris Paralympic men’s singles final.

World No.5 and two-time runner-up Reid was drawn in the same round-robin pool as Hewett last year and will aim to at least reach the semi-finals for the first time since 2021.

Lapthorne is a four-time quad singles finalist at the Masters but will be aiming to lift the title for the first time in 2024.

Doubles Masters

Hewett and Reid are now three-time Doubles Masters champions and are top seeds once again in Arnhem as they bid to become just the second partnership to win the Paralympic men’s doubles gold medal and the Doubles Masters title in the same year.

Victory would cap another memorable season for the world’s top two ranked doubles players, during which they have extended their tally of Grand Slam titles to 21 and surpassed the landmark of 50 doubles titles together.

Penney will join Hewett and Reid in the men’s doubles field. On the back of winning his fifth doubles title of 2024 at the Abingdon Futures, Penney makes his Doubles Masters debut partnering Dutchman Robin Groenewoud.

Lapthorne comes into this year’s Doubles Masters as a former two-time quad doubles champion, most recently when partnering fellow Brit Antony Cotterill to victory in 2016.

On the back of winning his third Paralympic quad doubles medal in Paris, Lapthorne’s bid for a third Doubles Masters title sees Lapthorne partner South Africa’s Donald Ramphadi, the player he partnered to win the French Open quad doubles title at Roland Garros in 2023. Lapthorne and Ramphadi will begin their campaign in Arnhem as second seeds.

It has already been a memorable season for Slade after crowning his Paralympic debut by partnering Lapthorne to win the quad doubles silver medal. Slade now also makes his Doubles Masters debut alongside Ahmet Kaplan as he pairs up with the Turkey’s Kaplan for just the second time since 2022.

When is the Wheelchair Masters draw?

The draws for both the singles and doubles events will take place on Friday 8 November before the round-robin group matches begin on Monday 11 November.
