There was British success at the Lexus GB Pro Series Roehampton this weekend with Sonay Kartal lifting the women’s singles title for a second successive week.
Kartal was back in action after winning last week’s ITF W35 competition, and had another impressive run to the final, not dropping a single set to claim her fifth ITF singles title of 2024 in Roehampton.
The final saw top seed Kartal defeat the fifth seed Haruka Kaji from Japan 6-3, 6-3.
Speaking after the final, world No.189 Kartal said “I’m happy to get these two weeks under my belt and leads me nicely going into next week when I head out to the U.S. It is super handy having a tournament like this on my doorstep, to train here and play these two weeks of matches. I’m super lucky to have it in my own country and makes it that little bit easier for me.”
In the men’s draw, M25 Nottingham champion James McCabe claimed his second singles title of 2024, defeating Masamichi Imamura 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
“It feels amazing to lift the title” said McCabe. “I didn’t have much confidence after the week before so I’m happy I got through it. I wasn’t expecting to win this one.”
The Lexus GB Pro-Series continues this week in Aldershot with Arthur Fery, Kyle Edmund, Sarah Beth Grey and Hannah Klugman set to play.
The British male duo Tom Hands and Harry Wendelken won their first ITF doubles title as a pair overcoming compatriots and third seeds Liam Hignett and James MacKinlay 6-3, 6-4.
In the women’s draw the Uzbekistan Australian duo, Nigina Abduraimova and Lizette Cabrera were victorious comfortably defeating the Japanese team, Akiko Omae and Eri Shimizu 6-2, 6-2.
LTA Tournament Director Erin McGready said: “It has been another incredible week here at Roehampton for the Lexus GB Pro-Series. There was such a high standard of play and hard-fought matches, it was great for everyone to enjoy. Thank you to the fantastic team at the NTC, all the officials, ball crew, stringer, driver, physios and the ITF supervisor for a very successful week.”
The international tournaments are part of the LTA’s Performance Competitions Calendar (PCC) which provides significantly enhanced opportunities for British players at each age and stage of the performance player pathway on home soil.
