Sonay Kartal makes Billie Jean King Cup debut and becomes Colour Holder No.329.

• 2 MINUTE READ

British No.3 Sonay Kartal will make her Billie Jean King Cup debut for the Lexus GB team in their 2025 Qualifier match against Germany - becoming LTA Colour Holder No.329.

Kartal received her second Billie Jean King Cup call-up following a sensational 12 months that has seen her claim her first WTA title at the Jasmin Open, reach the fourth round at the BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells, and cement herself inside the world's top 100 for the first time.

The 23-year-old will make her debut against Jule Niemeier in the first singles match of Great Britain's Billie Jean King Cup Qualifier against Germany.

LTA Colour Holders acknowledges, recognises and celebrates players, past and present, who have represented Great Britain in the Davis CupBillie Jean King Cup and Wheelchair Tennis World Team Cup, as well as at the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

Like a ‘cap’ that a player receives playing for their country in either football or rugby, when a player has competed for Great Britain in tennis, they receive a Colour.

Kartal’s breakthrough began almost a year ago when the Brighton-born star came through qualifying to reach the main draw at Wimbledon for the first time. There, she earned her maiden win at a Grand Slam before going on to set up a third round clash against former US Open champion Coco Gauff.

From there, Kartal lifted back-to-back ITF titles in Roehampton before announcing her arrival on the WTA stage in Tunisia where claimed the WTA 250 title. Since then, the Brit has grown from strength to strength on the tour and just last month, enjoyed a fairytale run to the fourth round of the WTA 1000 event at Indian Wells where she eventually exited to world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka.

She is currently sitting at a career-high ranking of world No.60.
