The Lexus GB Pro-Series events in Loughborough and Norwich saw British talent in both finals, but it was the international stars who took home the trophies at the W35 and M25 events.
At the W35 Loughborough, 19-year-old Ranah Akua Stoiber reached the finals of both the singles and doubles competition. Stoiber was defeated by top seed Susan Bandecchi in the singles final 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 and was due to be back in action in the doubles with fellow Brit Ella McDonald but unfortunately had to withdraw, meaning that Greece’s Valentini Grammatikopoulou and Estonia’s Elena Malygina claimed the title.
LTA Tournament Director Vsevolod Kevlych said, “It was a brilliant week in Loughborough, with many British players reaching the final rounds of the tournament, showcasing the importance of these events. Ranah played well all week, but unfortunately missed out in the singles final. Thank you to everyone involved, Loughborough University and the LTA for putting on the event.”
Spectators at the finals weekend of the M25 Norwich, played at Easton College Tennis Centre, were able to cheer on home favourites Stuart Parker as well as Conor Brady and Luke Hooper who made it to the final of their respected draws. Unseeded Parker defeated three seeded players, including compatriot Charles Broom, without dropping a set before reaching the last round. In the final Parker eventually lost out to top seed Clement Chidekh 6-3, 7-6(6).
Speaking on his win, Chideke said, “Ending my season in Norwich has been great. The level of tennis was very high for the first edition of the M25 here. Also, because we were put in the best conditions by the organisation who fully understood our needs. I was really happy to triumph and get through some difficult situations in those last three matches.”
In the doubles final, the British team of Brady and Hooper lost out to the third seeded pair of Michael Geerts and Johannes Seeman 6-3, 6-4. This is the first tournament Brady and Hooper have played in a competition together, and the first professional doubles tournament for 18-year-old Hooper.
LTA Tournament Director Barry Fulcher said, “It’s been great to bring an event of this stature to such a great facility in Easton College Tennis Centre in Norwich. The last few years has seen an increase in higher level events running in the city and it’s been fantastic to take that a step further this week with an ITF World Tennis Tour event.
“The calibre of player has been strong throughout the week, and today we have seen a worthy winner in top seed Clement Chideke. A big thanks to all at the college who have welcomed players, coaches, parents, officials and spectators also - each of whom have played their part in a superb week of tennis.”
