Olivia Nicholls has become the new women’s doubles British No.1 this week having reached world No.57 in the WTA rankings.
Nicholls had previously been joint British No.1 with former partner Alicia Barnett in December 2022, but has now made the position her own.
The 29-year-old has overtaken former Billie Jean King Cup teammate Heather Watson to reach the British top spot.
‘I’m really proud,” Nicholls said of her latest accolade. “It’s a nice reward for all of the hard work this year.”
Nicholls has been in strong form on the doubles court this season. Back in March, she won her second career WTA title alongside Australia’s Olivia Gadecki at the ATX Open in Austin, USA, before going on to lift the WTA 125 Charlston trophy only the week after.
In recent months, Nicholls has created a formidable partnership with Slovakia’s Tereza Mihalikova. The duo finished runners-up at the Libema Open in ‘S-Hertogenbosch, made the semi-finals of the Palermo Open and last week had a quarter-final run at the WTA 1000 Cincinnati Open.
During her career so far, Nicholls has also reached the semi-finals of the 2023 Wimbledon mixed doubles with Jonny O’Mara and was a pivotal part of the Billie Jean King Cup team that made the semi-finals in Glasgow back in 2022.
Next up, she’ll head to New York for the US Open, looking to better her career-best Grand Slam run at Wimbledon this year (Third round).
