Surrey Tennis claim County Cup Race Trophy for a record sixth time

Surrey were crowned County Cup Race Champions for 2024, following this year’s Winter County Cup Event.
The county have now won the overall leaderboard position for a record six times since its introduction in 2015. Depending on their performance in all 10 County Cup Events, points are given to each county throughout the year and the County Cup Race is aimed at being an acknowledgement to their performance.
Alison Taylor, LTA Councillor for Surrey, said: “Winning the LTA County Cup Race again, making it Surrey’s sixth time in nine years is a huge testament to the amazing coaches, players, parents and volunteers across the county.
“On behalf of Surrey Tennis I would like to congratulate the entire Surrey Tennis family. We hope this title brings joy to everyone involved in tennis across Surrey and we are already excited to battle hard to retain our title once again in 2025! Let’s go Surrey!’’
In addition to the overall County Cup Race winners, recognition is also given to the county that makes the biggest year on year improvement on their previous year's final position. Oxfordshire, were recognised, for the very first time, as the Most Improved County, following a number of strong performances at both junior and senior level, seeing their overall position go from joint 34th in 2023, to joint 16th in 2024.
Andrew Broadhurst, Chair for Tennis Oxfordshire, said: “I’m immensely proud that Oxfordshire has been recognised as the Most Improved County in this year’s LTA County Cup Race. I know from personal experience of attending many of these events over the years, both as a parent and as a volunteer with Tennis Oxfordshire, the hard work and dedication it takes to prepare and support a team across what are both physically, and sometimes mentally, challenging competitions.
“I’m extremely grateful for the dedication of all our county team players, coaches, team captains, parents and volunteers who helped make this happen.
It’s a fabulous milestone, one we have achieved for the first time in our history, a testament to all the planning and preparation that goes in and one that we look forward to continuing to build on over the coming years.”
Julie Piper, LTA Tournament Director for all County Cup Events, added: “This is a great effort by all those players for both Surrey and Oxfordshire who have given up their time to represent their respective counties.
“County Cup tennis is the backbone of the British game and for many, playing for their county will be the pinnacle of their tennis careers. I send my warmest congratulations to all the players who have played for Surrey and Oxfordshire throughout the year on this tremendous achievement.’’
