Mutua Madrid Open 2025: Jacob Fearnley claims biggest win as British trio progress to third round

• 3 MINUTE READ

Jacob Fearnley’s comeback win against 19th seed Tomas Mahac headlined a trio of wins for British stars at the Mutua Madrid Open, including Jack Draper and Cam Norrie.

Fearnley claimed the biggest career win by ranking over world No.20 Mahac 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 45 minutes to move into the third round.

British No.1 Draper also got off to a winning start by knocking out recent Hassan Grand Prix II runner-up Tallon Griekspoor 6-3, 6-4.

Meanwhile, Norrie built on his opening round win with an upset of his own, knocking out 26th seed 2-6, 6-4, 6-0.

Fearnley will play 15th seed Grigor Dimitrov in the next round, while Draper faces former Wimbledon runner-up Matteo Berrettini, and Norrie takes on Canadian Gabriel Diallo.

Fearnley – who came through qualifying to reach the main draw – got off to a slow start on serve up against Mahac, with the Czech breaking twice to see out the first set in just 28 minutes.

However, the turning point came early in the second set as Fearnley fought off more break points in both of his opening two service games to get himself back on track. The British No.2 struck back with his first break for a 4-2 lead and from there momentum fully shifted in Fearnley’s favour.

The 23-year-old’s composure on the biggest stage against the toughest opponents has been one of the shining parts of his game during his rise in the last 12 months and he showed it once again in Madrid. The Briton won an impressive 31/38 (82%) of points off his first serve in the final two sets and with a double break in the third, sealed another landmark win in his career.

Despite picking up a slight ankle injury, Fearnley was happy with the result and to be moving into the third round of an ATP Masters 1000 for the first time in his career.

“I actually rolled my ankle and was in a decent amount of pain and just kind of loosened up a little bit,” he said. “I think, believe it or not, a twisted ankle actually helped my performance today.

“The doc gave me some painkillers and then I felt I was serving that last set some of the best I’ve served in a long time. Super happy to get the win and looking forward to the next one.”

Draper wasted no time in clinching his third round spot up against an in-form opponent in Netherlands’ Griekspoor.

In only his third match on the clay this season after the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, it was a relatively routine win in the end, with the world No.6 needing just a single break in both sets to see out the win.

The Briton will face Berrettini for the third time in his career in the next round. Draper has won both previous meetings in Doha this year and the final of Stuttgart last summer.

Norrie clinched his second win of the season over Lehecka – backing up his recent victory over the Czech star at Indian Wells.

In similar style to countryman Fearnley, Norrie was on the back foot early on having been broke to love in his opening service game, but the 29-year-old came to life in the second set.

The former British No.1 managed to level the scores on serve after breaking Lehecka on the first game and once he got ahead in the third, there was no looking back. In one of his best performances of the season so far – Norrie reeled off the final seven straight games to clinch a hard-fought win.
