Day nine: Murray and Venus' bow out in semi-finals
Jamie Murray and Michael Venus' journey in Madrid came to an end in the semi-finals after they missed out to Sebastian Korda and Jordan Thompson 3-6, 6-3, 10-8.
The 11th seeds made a strong start in their semi-final battle against the American, Australian pair, who have taken out a number of the top doubles pairs across the week, as they wrapped up a dominant first set in just 27 minutes.
However, Korda and Thompson soon found their rhythm as they broke the five-time ATP titlists at 2-1 in the second set to force a match-deciding tie-break.
A turbulent tie-break saw six breaks of serve, as both doubles duos tussled for momentum but it was the singles stars who settled first and went on to book their ticket to the Madrid Open finals on their second match point.

There were three British wins at the Mutua Madrid Open on day six as Joe Salisbury, Neal Skupski, Lloyd Glasspool and Jamie Murray all booked their place in the second round of the men's doubles.
Teaming up for the first time since the Davis Cup Finals in 2022, Salisbury and Skupski got off to a strong start against wild cards Nicolas Mahut and Albano Olivetti - defeating the French team 6-4, 6-4.
Up next for the third seeds are Ariel Behar and Adam Pavlasek, who upset Mate Pavic and Marcelo Arevalo in a deciding match tie-break in round one.

Monday in Madrid handed defeats to two British tennis players as Cam Norrie was defeated by Casper Ruud and Heather Watson bowed out in the women's doubles draw.
Norrie faced freshly crowned Barcelona Open champion Ruud in their first meeting since the Australian Open, but the Brit couldn't quite replicate his winning ways in the Spanish capital as he bowed out in a 6-2, 6-4 defeat.
The fifth seed made a strong start as he broke the Brit on his opening serve game to take a 3-0 lead in just 10 minutes. From then on, Ruud looked to attack the Norrie serve, converting another two break points to clinch a dominant opening set.
Despite Norrie visibly raising his game in the second set and staying neck-and-neck with Ruud, the pivotol moment came at 5-4 on the Brit's serve when Ruud won the first two points of the game. A double fault from the British No.1 then gifted the Norweigan three match points but he only needed one to win it, as he wrapped up victory in an hour and 20 minutes with a pick-up near the net.
In the women's doubles draw, it was the end of the road for Watson and Xu Yifan who were defeated by Hsieh Su-wei and Elise Mertens 6-2, 6-4.
Tuesday's action will welcome the start of the men's doubles draw with Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski being the first Brits in action.
Cam Norrie made an excellent start to his Madrid Open campaign after the British No.1 saw off 17-year-old Brazilian Joao Fonseca, 6-1, 6-4 in an hour and nine minutes.
Norrie looked to play on the front foot from the off, as he broke the teenager on two of his three service games in the opening set. The world No.30 was dominant on serve, dropping just six points behind his first serve across the match, and served out the first set with a hold to love to take a strong lead after just 21 minutes.
The wild card entrant looked to get himself back in the contest in the second as he went toe-to-toe with Norrie but the Brit held firm before finding his breakthrough at 4-4 and eventually went on to wrap up a comprehensive win on his third match point.
Next up, Norrie will play recently crowned Barcelona Open champion and fifth seed Casper Ruud, in what will be their first meeting since Norrie defeated the Norweigan in four sets at the Australian Open.
Women's doubles action continued on day four, but it was the end of the road for Katie Boulter and Marketa Vondrousova who lost to Lyudmyla Kichenok and Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 7-6(6).
Britain's Katie Boulter and Jack Draper both exited the second round at the Mutua Madrid Masters in tough matches on day three in Spain.
26th seed Boulter lost out to American Robin Montgomery 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, while Draper was defeated by world No.9 Hubert Hurkacz 6-1, 7-5 in an hour and 19 minutes.
Boulter got off to an electric start in only her first match since the Billie Jean King Cup. She broke Montgomery on each of her first four service games and led by a set and break at 3-2 in the second.
However, the 19-year-old American came straight back to level the score and with it, wrestled momentum in her favour. After claiming the second set she raced out to a 5-2 lead in a decider, which proved too much for the Brit to overcome.
Boulter rescued four match points to overturn one break of serve, but Montgomery made it count on the next time of asking, stealing the win in just over two hours.
Having lost the opening five games, Draper grew into the match and battled toe-to-toe against the former Shanghai and Miami Open Masters champion.
The British star served much better in the following set, but found himself unable to create any break point opportunities against Hurkacz, who hit 91% of first serves in the second.
The eighth seed edged 6-5 ahead aftering taking his second break point of the set before serving out an impressive win over the 22-year-old Brit - his second against Draper this season (Monte Carlo).
Doubles
Heather Watson has joined Boulter as the second Brit into round two of the women's doubles alongside her partner China's Yifan Xu.
Watson and Xu made a flying start in the Spanish capital, defeating Anhelina Kalinina and Dayana Yastremska 6-2, 6-3.
In the next round they could face top seeds Elise Mertens and Su-Wei Hsieh.
Katie Boulter got her Mutua Madrid Open campaign underway with a win in the women's doubles event alongside Wimbledon singles champion Marketa Vondrousova.
Boulter and Vondrousova edged through a close opening set before seeing out a comfortable win over Eri Hozumi and Makoto Ninomiya 7-6(7), 6-0 in the first round.
This was Boulter's first doubles victory since the mixed doubles at Wimbledon last year alongside boyfriend, Alex de Minaur.
The British, Czech duo move into the second round where they could face either fifth seeds and this year's Australian Open runners-up Jelena Ostapenko and Lyudmyla Kichenok or Leylah Fernandez and Arantxa Rus.
Tomorrow, Boulter will play her first singles match tomorrow up against USA's Robin Montgomary.
Jack Draper faces a re-match with Poland's Hubert Hurkacz just weeks after the two faced each other in Monte Carlo. Hurkcaz won the match in a final set tie-break, but Draper previously defeated the Pole at the US Open.
The British action got underway on day one of the Mutua Madrid Open, with Jack Draper coming through another emphatic three-set battle against Thanasi Kokinakkis, while it wasn't meant to be for Emma Raducanu and Harriet Dart who both exited in the opening round.
British No.2 Draper eventually prevailed 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in another tight clash against the Australian.
This marked the pair's third career meeting, with both of their previous matches also going to three sets.
After the Brit secured a comfortable first set, the Australian looked to shift the momentum in his favour - eventually finding his breakthrough at 4-2 to level the battle. With little separating the two in the deciding set, it looked as though the match would be settled by a deciding tie-break but a last minute sprint from the world No.43 saw him break at the perfect time to seal victory on his first match point.
Draper will now move on to face Hubert Hurkacz where he'll be seeking revenge, after the Pole beat him at the Monte Carlo Masters just a couple of weeks ago.
Arriving in Madrid off the back of a quarter-final appearance at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Raducanu took on qualifier Maria Lourdes Carle, with the Brit losing out, 6-2, 6-2.
The Argentine had her foot on the gas pedal from the off as she broke Raducanu to love on the opening game of the matchbefore finding a second to seal the first set. Despite suffering an early break once again in the second, the Brit responded well to immediately break back but the world No.82 proved too tough to break down, winning five out of the next six games to eventually prevail.
Meanwhile, Dart, who came through two rounds of qualifying to reach the main draw, fell short in a tight battle against Spain's Cristina Bucsa, 6-4, 6-4.
After a close first set went the way of the Spaniard, the British No.2 looked as though she would force a decider having taken a commanding 4-0 lead in the second set. However, a surge from Busca saw her win six consecutive games to book her spot in the second round.
