Miami Open 2025: Jack Draper bows out in second round; Jacob Fearnley exits to world No.2 Alexander Zverev

β€’ 2 MINUTE READ

Jack Draper and Jacob Fearnley both exited the Miami Open in the second round after tough matches against Jakub Mensik and Alexander Zverev.

Last week’s Indian Wells champion Draper lost a close battle with 19-year-old rising star Mensik 7-6(2), 7-6(3) in an hour and 56 minutes.

Meanwhile, Fearnley was defeated by top seed Zverev 6-2, 6-4 in what has been another landmark week for the Briton.

Emma Raducanu is the last Brit left in singles action and will face McCartney Kessler on Sunday.

At the start of the match, it appeared that Draper had picked up where he left off in Indian Wells. He broke the ATP Next Gen star in the opening game before winning his first two service games without dropping a point.

Draper seemed to be in cruise control but with a 3-2 lead, the British No.1 struggled to find a first serve. Facing his first break point, the Briton rifled a short backhand into the net, allowing Mensik to not only draw level but wrestle momentum in his favour as he went on to clinch the set in a tie-break.

Just six days on from the biggest title win of his career, Draper sought to rediscover the energy and intensity that saw him beat the likes of Taylor Fritz and Carlos Alcaraz in the desert.

The world No.7 saved six break points in the opening seven games of the second set, before a crowd disturbance forced the two into an extended break after a change of ends.

Both players responded well and stayed on serve through to another tie-break, where errors became Draper’s undoing again. The Brit fired long on a short ball early on before a double fault later handed over the double mini break the Czech star needed to see out the win.

Earlier in the day, Fearnley’s Miami Open campaign came to an end against world No.2 and this year’s Australian Open runner-up Zverev.

Zverev – who also knocked the Brit out in Melbourne – put on a clinical performance on serve. The German hit 91% of first serves and only dropped seven points on his serve throughout the match.

Fearnley was competing in the second round of an ATP Masters 1000 event for the first time in his career but was unable to find a way to break down his opponent. A single break was all Zverev needed to see out the second set and book his place in the third round.

The 23-year-old is currently up to world No.73 – a new career-high ranking – after coming through qualifying to reach the second round. This will make him British No.2 come the end of the tournament.
