Day nine: Glasspool and Rojer bow out in quarter-final
Lloyd Glasspool and partner Jean-Julien Rojer have exited the Miami Open after a hard fought semi-final clash against Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos, losing 7-6(4), 3-6, 12-10.
The British, Dutch duo fell short in the opening round tie-break before finding two breaks on their opponents serve to take the second set and level the contest.
A turbulent match deciding tie-break saw nine breaks of serve with Glasspool and Rojer having a match point. However, the Spanish, Argentine pair dug deep to win four of the last five points and secure their spot in the final four.
There are now no Brits left in the Miami Open draw across the singles or doubles draw.
Recent results at the Miami Open
British No.1 Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram have missed out on a spot in the Miami Open men's doubles semi-final in a tight match deciding tie-break.
The four-time Grand Slam champions fell just short to German pair Kevin Krawietz and Tim Putz 6-3, 6-7(5), 10-7 in an hour and 52 minutes.
The British, American duo dealt the decisive break in the second set tie-break to level the scoreboard to a set apiece. A spot in the final four on the line, Salisbury and Ram looked to continue the momentum in the deciding tie-break but it was the all-German team who accelerated early on to clinch the early mini-break and eventually wrapped up victory on their first match point.
Katie Boulter's impressive run in Miami has come to an end at the hands of former world No.1 Victoria Azarenka.
Competing in the fourth round of a WTA 1000 for the first time in her career, the British No.1 fell short 7-5, 6-1 in an hour and 47 minutes.
Battling against tough, blustery conditions the Briton fought hard to claw the opening set back to level terms after suffering an early break. The two-time Grand Slam champion continued to ask the question on the Brit's serve, but Boulter batted away eight out of 10 break points before Azarenka eventually closed out the set on her sixth set point.
The world No.32 looked to capitalise on the momentum and wrap up the match in quick succession - breaking Boulter twice more in the second set to seal the victory.
Doubles
In the men’s doubles, Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram moved through to the quarter-final after defeating singles stars Stefanos Tsitsipas and Thansi Kokkinakis 7-5, 7-6(4).
The British, American duo are set to face Kevin Krawietz and Tim Putz in the quarter-final after the German duo were awarded a walkover by Andy Murray and Sebastian Korda. Murray picked up an ankle injury in his third round match against Thomas Machac on Sunday, ultiamtely forcing him to withdraw from the tournament.
Lloyd Glasspool and Jean-Julien Rojer also punched their ticket to the quarter-finals after defeating Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow 7-6(4), 6-4. The British, Dutch duo will take on Marcelo Granoller and Horacio Zeballos for a place in the semis.
Both Cam Norrie and Andy Murray exited in the third round of the Miami Open overnight, with Katie Boulter now the last Brit left in either singles draw.
Norrie lost against third seed and this year’s Australian Open runner-up Daniil Medvedev 7-5, 6-1.
The British No.1 fought hard to come back from 3-0 down early in the first set, but ultimately his serve let him down.
Medvedev broke six times across the two sets and served well to give Norrie little to no opportunity to get back into the match. The world No.4 dropped just one point on his first in the second set to round off the victory in an hour and 22 minutes.
Meanwhile, Murray lost a thriller against 23-year-old Tomas Machac 5-7, 7-5, 7-6(5) in three hours and 27 minutes.
Battling against a rain delay and an injury scare at the end of the third set, Murray put up a strong fight against the Czech, but ultimately lost the final four points in the tie-break to give Machac the victory.
Murray had made a brilliant start and dominated the early stages of the match. Having taken the opening set, the two-time champion had chances to extend his lead early in the second. However, a short rain delay gave Machac the time to regroup, and the Czech star came out firing.
Machac – who knocked out world No.5 Andrey Rublev in the previous round – found his form quickly after the break and finally got his first break of the match with a lethal forehand winner on his third set point.
Momentum fully in his favour, Machac had the chance to serve it out at 5-3 but facing his fifth break point of the set, the Czech hit a costly double fault. Despite a brief stoppage after the Brit went over on his ankle, Murray managed to save match point to force a deciding tie-break.
Murray held a 5-3 lead in the tie-break but having come back to 5-5 Machac found a laser backhand winner down the line and closed out the win on his second time of asking.
Doubles
In the men’s doubles, Lloyd Glasspool and Jean-Julien Rojer are through to the second round thanks to a 6-3, 7-6(6) win over Adrian Mannarino and Fabrice Martin.
Next up, they will take on Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow.
However, Neal Skupski and Santiago Gonzalez lost out to Marcelo Melo and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-4, 6-4.
Heather Waston was also defeated in the first round of the women’s doubles with Tereza Mihalikova. The British, Slovakian pair lost to Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 3-6, 10-5.
Katie Boulter is through to the fourth round at the Miami Open after one of the biggest wins of her career as Cam Norrie and Andy Murray both booked their spot in the third round of the men’s singles. However, Britain’s Jack Draper and Dan Evans lost out in deciding set tie-breaks in the second round.
Boulter’s brilliant start to 2024 continued against 11th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia – coming through with a 6-2, 6-3 win in just 90 minutes.
Her second win against the Brazilian in just over a month sees her into the fourth round in Miami for the first time in her career.
The San Diego Open champion will now play 27th seed Victoria Azarenka for a place in her first WTA 1000 quarter-final.
British No.1 Norrie came through a tough battle with Italian world No.63 Flavio Cobolli 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-2 in two hours and 37 minutes.
Despite missing out on three match points in the second set, Norrie came out firing in the decider. The Briton broke Cobolli twice and lost just three points on serve to clinch the victory.
Norrie moves on to face third seed Daniil Medvedev in the next round. Medvedev has been in impressive form this season, reaching the finals at the Australian Open and Indian Wells, as well as the semi-final in Dubai.
Murray secured back-to-back wins for the first time this season as he knocked out 29th seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry 7-6(0), 6-3.
Murray and Etcheverry returned to court with the score evenly balanced at 3-3 after rain delays interrupted play on Friday.
The two-time former champion lost to Etcheverry at the Australian Open earlier this year but put in a solid performance to knock out the Argentinian this time around. The 36-year-old won seven successive points to take the first set tie-break and needed just one break in the second to seal victory.
In the next round he will play Czech Republic’s Tomas Machac. Machac defeated Murray in their previous meeting in Marseille this year and took out fifth seed Andrey Rublev in the second round.
Draper narrowly lost out against 22nd seed Nicolas Jarry 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-6(2) in a three-and-a-half-hour thriller.
The British No.2 had two match points on serve leading 5-4 in the deciding set, but Jarry showed his quality to come back and edge the match in a tie-break.
Evans was also defeated by the smallest of margins in his second round clash with 31st seed Christopher Eubanks – losing out to the American 7-6(3), 3-6, 7-6(7).
The 33-year-old saved two break points in the second to force a deciding set. Both players stayed strong on serve throughout the third as they battled on to a tie-break. Evans had two match points at 6-4, but failed to serve out the win as Eubanks took five of the last six points of the match.
Sunday’s order of play will see Murray return to face Machac. Neal Skupski and Lloyd Glasspool are also in men’s doubles action.
Friday's action in Miami was disrupted due to heavy rain fall across the day.
Andy Murray's second round match against Tomas Martin Etcheverry was tied at 3-3 in the first set before the rain forced players off the court.
Saturday will now see a host of Brits in action with Murray, Katie Boulter, Cam Norrie, Jack Draper and Dan Evans all due to play in a bumper schedule.
Katie Boulter and Dan Evans both picked up wins through tricky conditions at Miami Gardens on day three of the Miami Open.
Boulter is into the third round after Czech Republic’s Brenda Fruhvirtova retired trailing 7-6(5), 1-0.
In the next round, she’ll play Beatriz Haddad Maia, who came back from a set down to defeat France's Diane Parry.
Meanwhile, Evans got his campaign underway with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over former world No.21 Lorenzo Sonego.
Next up, he'll face 31st seed Christopher Eubanks.
Coming into a WTA 1000 event as a seeded player for the first time, Boulter went a break down against the 16-year-old twice in the opening set, but came back on both occasions to force a tie-break. The British No.1 used experience to her advantage to see out the set with a huge forehand winner down the line, before the rain began to fall.
Fruhvirtova had been struggling with the heat towards the end of the set and once the rain cleared, it only became worse. After Boulter broke at the start of the second, the Czech star was unable to continue, giving the Briton her opening win in Miami.
Sonego got off to a blistering start against Evans and wrapped up a one set lead in just 30 minutes.
The 33-year-old Brit stayed positive and took his opportunities early in the second. Having raced to a 3-0 lead, all momentum shifted in favour of the British star, who only dropped two points on his first serve throught the whole set.
With the scores level, Evans’ backhand continued to cause Sonego problems and soon gave him the initial break in the decider.
Both players had chances on each other’s serve the rest of the way, but Evans kept his nerve. A laser backhand down the line set up two match points on the Brit’s serve, which he took on the first time of asking.
Doubles results
Andy Murray opened his men's doubles account with a victory alongside USA's Seb Korda.
Murray and Korda knocked out fellow Brit Julian Cash and Tallon Griekspoor 7-5, 6-4 to set up a clash with seventh seeds Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz.
Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram also made a winning start at the Miami Open - beating William Blumberg and Casper Ruud 7-6(5), 6-4.
The 2021 semi-finalists will continue their campaign for a first title in Miami in a tough second round draw against Stefanos Tsitsipas and Thanasi Kokkinakis.
It's been a winning start for the Brits in Miami with Andy Murray fighting back from a set down against former world No.6 Matteo Berrettini and Jack Draper easing past Taro Daniel to both reach the second round.
Murray put in a valiant effort against the Italian to eventually come through an almost three hour battle, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The two-time Miami Open champion put a tough opening set behind him as he dug deep to turn the tide in the second set - eventually finding a break on his opponent's serve to take a 4-2 lead. From then on, Berrettini's energy and fitness levels seemed to waver, with the Italian almost collapsing towards the end of the set.
With the momentum swinging in his favour, the Brit broke Berrettini on his opening service game of the decider before going on to secure the win with a beautiful backhand winner down the line.
Murray has now won each of his last four opening round matches and will be looking to earn back-to-back wins for the first time this year when he faces Argentina's Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the next round.
Meanwhile, Draper kick-started his Miami Open campaign with a dominant 6-3, 6-2 win over world No.78 Daniel.
The 22-year-old bounced back from a first round defeat at Indian Wells to wrap up victory at the tournament where he made his ATP tour debut as a wild card three years ago.
The Brit’s serve proved his deadliest weapon - dropping just one point behind his first serve and racking up 10 aces across the match. The world No.42 continued to display his aggressive style of play, hitting with power and consistency to break the Japanese star three times and seal the win in an hour and 10 minutes.
Draper will now face 22 seed Nicolas Jarry in the second round on Friday.
