Luke Johnson seals doubles title in Porto, British winners on home soil & wheelchair stars shine in Europe

Raducanu reaches quarter-final in Washington

In one of the standout results last week – Emma Raducanu made the quarter-final of the WTA 500 Mubadala Citi DC Open.

The 21-year-old beat Elise Mertens and Peyton Stearns en route to her fourth WTA quarter-final of the season where she lost to eventual champion Paula Badosa 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.

The young Brit continues to rise back up the rankings and is now up at world No.69.

Johnson adds fifth Challenger title on the season

The British title-winners start off in Portugal, where British doubles star Luke Johnson added a fifth ATP Challenger title to his season at the Porto Open.

Johnson and Netherlands’ Sander Arends didn’t drop a set through four matches in Porto – finishing with a 6-3, 6-2 win over fellow Brit Josh Paris and India’s Ramkumar Ramanathan in the final.

Johnson jumps five places in the world rankings to world No.69 and is currently one of eight British players ranked inside the ATP doubles top 100.

British titlists in all four events in Roehampton

It was a clean sweep of British winners at the latest Lexus GB Pro Series Roehampton in the W35 and M25 ITF World Tennis Tour events.

In the women’s singles – Sonay Kartal continued her form from Wimbledon as she defeated Germany’s Nastasja Schunk 7-5, 6-1 in the final to be crowned champion.

Kartal has now won four W35 singles titles this season, with three coming on home soil as part of the LTA Performance Competitions Calendar.

The W35 doubles title went to second seeds and British duo Ella McDonald and Holly Hutchinson. The Brits beat Gabriella Da Silva Fick and Alice Robbe 6-2, 3-6, 10-3 in a close final to clinch their third title together in 2024.

George Loffhagen took home the men’s singles crown after defeating Norway’s Viktor Durasovic 6-4, 6-3 in the final.

Loffhagen went one better than his runner-up performance in Nottingham the week before to seal a fourth career title.

Britain’s Harry Wendelken and Australia’s Joshua Charlton won the men’s doubles trophy thanks to a brilliant comeback against Durasovic and Lukas Hellum Lilleengen 3-6, 7-6(1), 11-9.

British trio win wheelchair tennis titles

Andy Lapthorne, Greg Slade and Andrew Penney led the British champions on an impressive week of wheelchair tennis action.

33-year-old Lapthorne lived up to his No.1 seed credentials at the s Versicherung Austrian Open – taking home the ITF 2 quad singles title with a dominant 6-1, 6-3 win over Czech Republic’s Tomas Masaryk in the final.

Lapthorne teamed up with fellow Brit Slade to win their third tournament together this season. In the final, they beat Turkish partnership Ugur Altinel and Ali Ataman 6-4, 6-3.

19-year-old Penney won both the singles and doubles titles at the ITF Futures Series, Genoa Open.

Third seed Penney clinched his second singles title of the season by defeating top seeded French star Nicolas Charrier 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 in a tightly contested final.

Penney then teamed up with the Frenchman in the double, where they lost just five games in their two matches – finishing with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Roger Baumann and Anto Jokic.
