• 3 MINUTE READ

Catch up on the tennis titles from last week, including a first British doubles trophy in Barcelona, wheelchair success in Munich and a return to form in Mexico.

Johnson crowned first British champion in Barcelona

Luke Johnson enjoyed a week to remember as he claimed his first ATP 500 title and became the first British player to win the Barcelona Open doubles crown in the Open Era.

The British doubles star teamed up with Dutchman Sander Arends to lift the title after defeating countrymen Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski in the final 6-3, 6-7(1), 10-6.

This is the third ATP title that Johnson and Arends have won together and their biggest so far – adding to their wins in Metz and Hong Kong.

Johnson’s continued progress on the ATP Tour has seen him reach a new career-high ranking of world No.40 this week and the duo are now 10th in the ATP Doubles Team Rankings. The top eight teams at the end of the season will qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals.

For Salisbury and Skupski, this was their second ATP final of the season, having also finished runners-up in Doha a few months ago.

Wheelchair success for Hewett, Reid, Johns & Shuker

Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid headlined a hat-trick of titles for Britain’s wheelchair players over the last week after winning the singles and doubles titles between them at the Allianz Para Trophy in Munich and earning their first clay court titles of 2025.

Having each started the week with a return to the world No.1 men’s singles and men’s doubles rankings, respectively, they justified their top billing in Munich as Hewett dropped just four games against both Nicolas Charrier of France and Joachim Gerard of Belgium before defeating second seed Gustavo Fernandez of Argentina 7-6(2), 6-3 in the singles final.

Reigning French Open men’s doubles champions, Hewett and Reid didn’t have the easiest of times as they returned to the clay for the first time since winning the men’s doubles gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.

Hewett and Reid fought back to defeat second seeds Gerard and Maikel Scheffers to seal their 56th title as a doubles partnership.

There was also a first men’s main draw doubles title of the year for Joshua Johns at the Dubrovnik Open in Croatia. Johns and Poland’s Jakub Dominik Bukala beat Serbia’s Elvis Fakic and Germany’s Carsten Strack 6-1, 6-2 to reach the final of the ITF Futures tournament and then defeated Austrian duo Martin Legner and Joseph Riegler 7-5, 5-7, (11-9) to clinch their first title.

Elsewhere, there was another strong performance from British No.1 Lucy Shuker at the Japan Open as she tried to win her second Super Series title of the year partnering Aniek van Koot of the Netherlands.

One of four Brits challenging for titles in Japan, Shuker and partner Van Koot eventually finished as runners-up following a deciding match tie-break in the women’s doubles final.

Marcus Willis won his first ATP Challenger men’s doubles title of the season at the San Luis Potosi Challenger in Mexico.

The 34-year-old Briton teamed up with Ivan Liutarevich to overcome American partnership Trey Hilderbrands and Alfredo Perez 6-3, 6-4 in the final.

This is Willis’s second final of the season, having finished runner-up at the Lexus Glasgow Challenger earlier in the season.

In 2024, Willis won an impressive seven doubles titles on the ATP Challenger Tour.

Clarke, McDonald & Peniston bag ITF titles

Jay Clarke continues to impress on the ITF World Tennis Tour having clinched his third singles title of the season at the M25 Santa Margherita di Pula.

In his first clay court event of the season, Clarke reached the final without dropping a set before coming back to beat France’s Arthur Gea 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the final.

Clarke has now reached the final of his last five singles events stretching back to the end of February.

Another player in strong form is 19-year-old Ella McDonald, who capture her 11th professional doubles title and third this year at the W35 Santa Margherita di Pula this weekend as well.

McDonald – who is supported by the LTA Pro Scholarship Programme, presented by Lexus – won the title with Finland’s Laura Hietaranta after a 6-2, 6-3 final victory over Anastasia Bertacchi and Viola Turini.

Finally, Ryan Peniston added his name to the list of British champions this week in the M25 Sharm El Sheikh alongside former junior Wimbledon runner-up Yaroslav Demin.

Peniston and Demin had to beat fellow Briton Hamish Stewart and his partner David Poljak in the final 6-2, 3-6, 11-9 to take home the title.
