LTA mourns passing of Charles Trippe, MBE

• 2 MINUTE READ

It is with great sadness that the entire LTA family mourns Past President Charles Trippe, MBE, who passed away yesterday at the age of 81.

Charles was President of the LTA from 2003-2005, but his administration in the sport began much earlier.

Mr. Trippe graduated from Nottingham University Business School in 1965 with a degree in Industrial Economics.

A long-time tennis lover and stand-out player, he represented Great Britain at the 1965 World Student Games in Budapest and played for his county at senior level for 22 years.

An exemplary career serving the sport began in 1991 when he joined the LTA Council representing Hampshire & Isle of Wight LTA.  In 1998 he took on the role of Honorary Treasurer of the LTA, becoming Deputy President of the LTA from 2000-2002.

On 20 September 2004, Charles along with then LTA Performance Director David Felgate, were involved in the ground breaking ceremony for what would become the National Tennis Centre, officially opened by HM Queen Elizabeth in 2007.

From 2005 to 2009 Mr. Trippe also was a member of the International Tennis Federation Board (ITF) and a Vice President as well as Chairman of the ITF Seniors and Constitutional Committees. In 2009 he was appointed to the ITF Davis Cup Committee and in January 2011, Mr. Trippe joined the Tennis Foundation (Britain’s leading Tennis Charity) Board of Trustees as Honorary Treasurer.

During his two decades on the LTA Council, Charles served on the following Boards and Committees:

  • LTA Main Board
  • Chairman, National Tennis Development Divisional Board
  • Competitions and Tournaments Committee
  • AELTC Committee of Management
  • ITF Board of Directors
  • Chairman, ITF Seniors and Constitutional Committees
  • ITF Davis Cup Committee
  • Honorary Treasurer, Tennis Foundation Board of Trustees
  • Treasurer, Vets LTA
  • Member of Tennis Europe Veterans Committee

At County level, Mr. Trippe was Chairman of Hampshire & Isle of Wight LTA from 1997-2003, County Treasurer of Hampshire & Isle of Wight LTA from 1977-1998 and County Captain from 1977-1983.  He was also a member of The All England Lawn Tennis Club and the International Club of Great Britain.

The culmination of Charles’s extensive contributions to the sport saw him awarded with an MBE in the 2013 Queen’s Birthday Honours list for services to tennis.

He is survived by his wife, Helen and daughter Katherine. Funeral details, once known, will be updated here later.
