Julian Cash & Lloyd Glasspool clinch Tokyo Open doubles title

• 1 MINUTE READ

British doubles duo Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool have won the Tokyo Open men’s doubles title in only their second tournament together.

Cash and Glasspool lifted the title having saved a match point in the deciding championship tie-break against Ariel Behar and Robert Galloway – coming through with a 6-4, 4-6, 12-10 victory after an hour and 21 minutes.

The ATP 500 trophy is the biggest of Cash’s career so far and his third at tour-level – adding to wins alongside Galloway in Delray Beach and Mallorca this year.

Meanwhile, it’s a second ATP 500 tournament win for former world No.7 Glasspool (Hamburg 2022) and marks a fifth tour title to his career tally.

Having made the quarter-final at their first event in Hangzhou last week, the Britons came to Japan full of confidence in their fledgling partnership.

They knocked out fourth seeds Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni in the opening round 7-5, 3-6, 10-5 before a quarter-final walkover saw them through to the semis.

With a final place on the line, they stormed past singles stars Alex Michelson and Alejandro Tabilo 6-3, 6-3 in just 59 minutes.

In an impressive performance in the final against Behar and Galloway, the Brits saved two break points to win the opening set, before they were eventually taken to a match tie-break. At the crunch point of the match, Cash and Glasspool saved match point at 10-9 down to win the final three points in a row.

The victory should see Cash rise to a new career-high ranking – currently at world No.33 in the live rankings – while Glasspool jumps up to world No.39.
