Britain’s Jodie Burrage won the biggest title of her career over the weekend – finishing her season with the W100 Dubai singles trophy.
The 25-year-old wild card finished an impressive week by defeating top seed Polina Kudermetova in the final 6-3, 6-3.
The result marks a successful end to a tough season for the former British No.2, having spent a lengthy spell on the sidelines dealing with injuries.
In a post on Instagram after her final, Burrage said: This one meant a lot. Proud of myself for this one and ending a brutal year with my biggest title. It’s not how many times you get knocked down, it’s whether you get back up.”
Burrage came into Dubai on the back of a series of strong results at ITF level. In her previous five events, she had reached three semi-finals at the W75 Glasgow, W50 Funchal and W35 Villeneuve d'Ascq, as well as her first final of the season at the W75 Trnava last week.
Coming into Dubai as a wild card, Burrage got off to a promising start with a straight sets win over seventh seed Aliona Falei before beating Slovakian and Billie Jean King Cup finalist Viktoria Hruncakova 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-2 in the second round.
The Briton overcame France’s Amandine Hesse 6-4, 6-4 in the quarter-final and then went on to knock out Belgian Sofia Costoulas in the semis 6-4, 6-3.
Having made back-to-back finals in as many weeks, Burrage made no mistake on the second time of asking. She broke world No.106 Kudermotova twice in both sets during the final to go on and lift the biggest trophy of her career.
Burrage – who is supported by our Pro Scholarship Programme, presented by Lexus – is now back up to world No.179 and will have her eyes on breaking back into the top 100 next year.
Last week it was also announced that she will feature in the main draw for the Australian Open based on protected ranking.
