Burrage & Brooks star in Trnava
Jodie Burrage enjoyed a fantastic run at the W75 Trnava last week – finishing runner-up in her first singles final of the season.
The 25-year-old dropped just six games en route to the semi-finals, where she went on to beat Czech star Dominika Salkova 6-4, 6-4 to make a singles final for the first time since the Rothesa Open Nottingham last year.
In the final, Burrage eventually lost out to this year’s Lexus Surbiton Trophy runner-up, former Wimbledon semi-finalist and top seed Tatjana Maria 6-4, 6-1.
Burrage has been in great form over the past few months since returning from a six month spell off the court with injury. The former top 100 star has reached semi-finals at the W75 Glasgow, W50 Funchel and W35 Villeneuve d’Ascq to add to her final in Slovakia. She now heads to Dubai for the W100 ITF event this week.
Britain’s Madeline Brooks came away with the doubles title in Trnava alongside Dutch partner Isabelle Haverlag.
Third seeds Brooks and Haverlag beat Czech duo Anastasia Detiuc and Aneta Kucmova 7-6(5), 6-1 in the final.
This is Brooks fourth doubles title of the season and of her career. It’s also her third title at W75 level, which has taken her up to a new career high of world No.127.
Emile Hudd also featured as an ITF doubles champion last week with Australia's Joshua Charlton at the M25 Carrara.
In their third consecutive final together, Hudd and Charlton beat Japanese team Issei Okamura and Daisuke Sumizawa 7-6(5), 6-3.
Bartram, Johns & Bishop capture doubles titles
Ben Bartram, Joshua Johns and Ruby Bishop all collected doubles titles during the penultimate week on the 2024 UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour for Britain’s senior players, with all three players narrowly missing out on adding singles titles at their respective tournaments in Turkey and France.
Bartram enjoyed at great week at the TTF 1 tournament in Antalya and partnered Takano to beat Dutch top seeds Robin Groenewoud and Martin ter Hofte 6-4, 6-7(4), 10-8 in the opening round of the men’s doubles before they went on to defeat second seeds Gaetan Menguy of France and Alwande Sikhosana of South Africa 6-4, 6-7(4), 10-6 in the final two matches later.
The victory gave Bartram his second ITF 3 doubles title of his career and his second career title partnering Takano.
After beating both fourth seed Ter Hofte and Groenewoud in the men’s singles, Bartram eventually finished runner-up to Chinese second seed Zhenxu Ji.
Johns and Belgium’s Alexander Lantermann won their first men’s doubles title together as a partnership at the BNP Paribas International Paratennis Toulouse-Balma, where the second seeds secured back-to-back 6-3, 6-4 wins in quarter and semi-final matches against French and Italian pairings.
Johns and Lantermann then put up an even more polished performance in the final to defeat the top seeds, Lhaj Boukartacha of Morocco and Spain’s Patxi Fadrique 6-1, 6-2 to give Johns his fourth doubles title of 2024.
Johns narrowly missed out on adding the singles title despite a strong start in the final against Boukartacha, with the Moroccan eventually prevailing 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.
Bishop ends her 2024 season with four women’s doubles titles after partnering Sandrine Cauderon-Paulin to two 6-0, 6-0 round-robin victories in Toulouse-Balma, but was it her doubles partner who denied Bishop of the opportunity of leaving France with two winners trophies.
Straight sets wins for second seed Bishop against Laura-Line Legendre of France and Samira Benichi of Morocco set up her title decider against Cauderon-Paulin, but despite taking the top seed to three sets Bishop ultimately lost out 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-0.
There were also a brace of runners-up trophies for Martha Harris at the Bourassa Savaria International Open in Montreal.
In a five-way women’s singles round-robin draw Harris beat Canada’s Natalia Lanucha and Vicki Morton and the USA’s Ashley Sisti in straight sets, but had her title challenge ended by Anne-Marie Dolina of Canada 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3. Dolina and Lanusha also beat Harris and Sisti 6-1, 6-3 in the doubles decider.
