Jodie Burrage and Freya Christie take home Lexus GB Pro Series doubles title in Glasgow

• 2 MINUTE READ

British partnership Jodie Burrage and Freya Christie enjoyed success on home soil at the Lexus GB Pro-Series event in Glasgow last week.

The pair came through a tight three-set final against Georgia’s Mariam Bolkvadze and her Dutch partner Isabelle Haverlag winning 6-4, 3-6, (10-5).

For former top 100 singles player Burrage – who also made the semi-finals of the singles – it’s another strong step back on her road to recovery from consecutive injuries at the start of this year. Speaking after the doubles final, she said, “Very happy with the win, it’s been a really good week. Freya is one of my best friends so it’s always nice to play together – she definitely carried me to the title! It’s always nice to play on home turf, the courts are very nice and it’s a great facility.”

Christie added, “It’s been a great week, we played some good doubles and we seem to play well in the UK, it suits us. This has been a really nice tournament. We played some clutch tie-breaks this week and we’re happy. We’re looking to keep on growing as a team and see how far we can get.”

Spectators at the Scotstoun Tennis Centre were also able to cheer 23-year-old Anton Matusevic who made it to the final of the men’s event, continuing a great run of form that saw him claim the title at the M25 Edgbaston the week before.

Matusevich lost out to Denmark’s Christian Sigsgaard 6-2, 7-6(5) in the final, with the Dane brimming with excitement after winning his first pro-level title, “This was my best week ever – I’ve never won a tournament before, never even made a final before.

"I played some of the best tennis of my life. I really enjoyed coming here – the facility is great and the staff have been really nice. I managed to play up to my abilities and produced some of the tennis I’ve been seeing on the practice court. It’s always tough when there’s titles on the line, but in the end I managed to get a bit of luck with a net cord on match point and I’m very happy.”

LTA Tournament Director Mike Cohen said, “This week’s Lexus Pro Series event has been a great success, with British players doing well in both the women’s and men’s doubles, as well as British players getting into the semi-finals and finals of the singles.

"It’s always nice to see the next generation of players breaking through, who someday we will see on the main tour. We’ve had big crowds all week as usual in Glasgow, which has generated a great atmosphere for the players.”
