Japan Open 2024: Preview, draw, schedule, and how to watch

The Japan Open, the third Super Series event of the year on the ITF’s UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour, returns this month as one of the most iconic wheelchair tournaments outside of the Grand Slams celebrates its 40th edition.

The event returned to the wheelchair tour in 2023 for the first time since 2019, with the 2020, 2021 and 2022 tournaments cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic,

When is the Japan Open 2024?

The Japan Open will take place from Tuesday 9 April through to Sunday 14 April.

Where is the Japan Open 2024 being held?

The Japan Open will take place at the Iizuka Sports Resort Tennis Courts in Iizuka City, Fukuoka, on the same site as the tournament’s traditional home previously known as Chikuho Heights.

Which British tennis players will be competing at the Japan Open 2024?

Alfie Hewett, Gordon Reid and Lucy Shuker will contest the men’s or women’s draws at this year’s Japan Open with British No.2 and world No.5 Reid still currently the only previous winner of the men’s singles title in Iizuka after back-to-back victories in 2017 and 2018.

Reid and current world No.1 Hewett are both set to be among the top seeds at this year tournament which will see eight of the world's top 10 men's wheelchair players contest the Japan Open trophy.

Reid beat Japan’s now-retired former world No.1 Shingo Kunieda in the 2018 final, having beaten Hewett in the semi-finals before going on to partner Hewett to victory in the men’s doubles the same year. That was Reid’s second Japan Open doubles title after joining forces with Kunieda to victory in 2015, while he and Hewett were doubles semi-finalists in 2019.

Hewett will arrive in Japan as world No. 1, having returned to the top spot as a result of his victory at the Cajun Classic, the second Super Series tournament of 2024, in early March. Meanwhile, Shuker will arrive in Japan after earning back-to-back doubles titles during three tournaments in South Korea.
