• 2 MINUTE READ

Keep up to date on the latest from the Brits competing on the ATP, WTA, ITF and wheelchair tennis tours as the British doubles teams continue to pick up strong results, Heather Watson impresses in Nottingham and Gordon Reid makes a final in Switzerland.

Brits continue to impress on doubles court

There were several impressive doubles results last week, including a WTA semi-final and two British teams who finished runners-up in ATP Challenger events in Netherlands and Spain last week.

Olivia Nicholls and Slovakia’s Tereza Mihalikova have been going from strength to strength in recent weeks, adding another good performance at the Palermo Open.

The Hertogenbosch runners-up had another run to the final four of a WTA 250 event but were pipped to a place in the final by Yvonne Cavelle-Reimers and Aurora Zantedeschi 6-4, 0-6, 10-6.

Jay Clarke and Dan Stevenson continued their fine doubles form in 2024 by teaming up to make the final at the Amersfoort Challenger.

The Brits made the final without dropping a set, however with the title on the line, narrowly lost to Marcelo Demoliner and Guillermo Duran 7-6(2), 6-4 in just over an hour and a half.

Liam Hignett and James MacKinlay beat the top and fourth seeds on their way to a first Challenger final but missed out on the title to French duo Dan Added and Arthur Reymond 6-2, 6-4.

Watson back in winners circle in Nottingham

Former British No.1 Heather Watson took home the W50 singles title at the Lexus Nottingham Tennis Centre, marking her first trophy of the season.

32-year-old Watson lifted the title after beating third seed Manon Leonard 6-3, 6-0 in a dominant final on Sunday.

Watson also had to beat three Brits on her way to the final, including former Billie Jean King Cup teammate Katie Swan, Ella McDonald and a semi-final against 16-year-old Mimi Xu.

In an all-British women’s doubles final, Naiktha Bains and Amelia Rajecki came from a set down to clinch the title against Swan and Xu 1-6, 6-4, 10-8.

For both Bains and Rajecki, the win marked their first doubles titles of the season so far.

In the men’s singles, George Loffhagen had an impressive week, reaching the final after knocking out second seed Lucas Poullain in the semi-finals, before finishing runner-up to Australia’s James McCabe 6-0, 6-1.

Meanwhile, British duo James Davis and Matthew Summers sealed the men’s doubles trophy after beating Australian team and top seeds Joshua Charlton and Blake Ellis 6-3, 6-4 in the final.

Monday takes title in America

Johannus Monday and Aidan McHugh were the standout stars at the M25 East Lansing in the USA last week with both Brits reaching the final.

In only their first meeting, it was University of Tennessee star Monday who got his hands on the trophy – defeating his compatriot 6-2, 6-2 in the final.

Earlier this year, Monday was ranked as the No.1 player in the NCAA singles rankings.

Reid makes final in Switzerland

Gordon Reid, Greg Slade and Andrew Penney were flying the flag for Great Britain at the Swiss Open ITF1 wheelchair tennis event.

Reid beat both Ruben Spaargaren and Stephane Houde en route to the men’ singles final where he faced Wimbledon runner-up Martin De La Puente – narrowly losing to the Spaniard 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.

Penney however lost out in the opening round to Chile’s Brayan Tapia 6-1, 7-6(4).

Slade made it to the semi-finals of the quad doubles with Justin Michel but were defeated by Turkish team Ugur Altinel and Ali Ataman 7-5, 4-6, 10-7.
