Henry Patten rises to British No.1 doubles spot for the first time

• 1 MINUTE READ

Henry Patten has become the new men’s doubles British No.1 this week after clocking a career-high ranking of world No.15 in the ATP rankings.

The 28-year-old has overtaken four-time Grand Slam champion Joe Salisbury to claim the top spot in the British rankings off the back of an incredible year on the ATP Tour.

“It means a lot to be ranked as GB’s No.1,” Patten said, reflecting on his latest career achievement. “We currently have six British players ranked in the top 40 in the world which is quite something to be a part of.

“It's been a year of milestones for me winning my first ATP titles, Wimbledon, earning my first Davis Cup cap, and this achievement is right up there with the rest of them.”

Patten has been in remarkable form this year, having ticked off a several career milestones. Back in April, he joined forces with Finland’s Harri Heliovaara and went on to capture the trophy in their first tournament together at the Grand Prix Hassan II – marking Patten’s maiden ATP tour-level title.

The pair continued to flourish on the clay, backing up their strong run in Marrakech with a second title at the ATP 250 tournament in Lyon. However, it wasn’t until the British grass court swing that the formidable duo really stamped their mark on the doubles scene after they sealed their first Grand Slam crown at Wimbledon.

September marked another memorable month for Patten, who received his first Davis Cup call up for the Group Stages in Manchester. Representing his country for the first time in the Brits’ tie against Canada, the 28-year-old secured a win on debut alongside Neal Skupski to become Colour Holder No.327.

Recently, Patten and Heliovaara clinched their fourth tour-level trophy of the season at the indoor hard court tournament in Stockholm, which consequently catapulted the Briton to a new career-high ranking.

The duo will now turn their attention to the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, where they will compete at the year-end championships for the first time as a partnership.
