Brits perform at end of year finals
While the action at the Billie Jean King Cup got underway last week, it was also the showcase for the best men’s and wheelchair players to do battle in the Nitto ATP Finals and Wheelchair Tennis Masters.
In Turin for the Nitto ATP Finals, Wimbledon champion Henry Patten was hoping to become the third Brit to win a title at the end of season showdown.
Patten and Harri Heliovaara eased through their group stage matches with three wins from three to top the Mike Bryan group and reach the semi-finals.
In the final four however, they faced now world No.1s Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic – losing out 7-6(1), 7-6(4).
The British No.1 finishes his breakout season as world No.14, with four tour-level titles and 43 wins on the season.
Over in Arnham, Gordon Reid and Alfie Hewett were the standout British performers at the Wheelchair Tennis Masters.
Former world No.1 Reid reached his third Masters singles final and first since 2017 after beating Spain’s Martin de la Puente in the semis 6-2, 6-1.
In the final he faced top seed Tokito Oda – who defeated Hewett in the previous round. Reid got off to a strong start but eventually lost to the 18-year-old 2-6, 6-0, 6-2.
Reid and Hewett also finished runners-up in the doubles event. The Paralympic gold medallists lost against De la Puente and Joachim Gerard 6-4, 6-2.
Doubles titles keep on coming
Luke Johnson’s stellar 2024 season took another strong step after the British doubles star won his eighth title of the season at the Lyon Challenger – his seventh Challenger trophy of the year.
Johnson teamed up with Austria’s Lucas Miedler for the first time in France, putting together an impressive title run.
In the final, they overcame Sergio Martos Gornes and David Pichier 6-1, 6-2 in a dominant performance to help the Brit up to a career-high world No.58.
British duo Ella McDonald and Holly Hutchinson got their hands on silverware at the W50 Funchel after coming through two match tie-breaks in their final matches.
They beat fellow Brit Sarah Beth Grey and Martyna Kubka 6-2, 1-6, 10-4 in the semis, before moving on to clinch a comeback win over Rita Bhatia and Polina Iatcenko in the final 3-6, 6-2, 10-8.
It’s 19-year-old McDonald’s and Hutchinson’s biggest title of their careers and their fourth together this year.
Mark Whitehouse also captured the M25 Vale do Lobo doubles title this week with Spaniard Ivan Marrero Curbelo.
They defeated Whitehouse's compatriot, Finn Bass and his partner Pedro Araujo in the final 7-5, 6-3.
Lucy Shuker completes the British doubles champions from last week – capturing her sixth trophy of the season.
Shuker and French partner Pauline Deroulede won the BNP Paribas Yvelines with a 6-2, 6-1 final win over Chile’s Macarena Cabrillana and France’s Charlotte Fairbank.
