Patten, Hewett, Reid & Lapthorne crowned champions in Melbourne
Henry Patten became the fourth British player to win multiple men’s doubles Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open alongside Finland’s Harri Heliovaara.
The Wimbledon champions came from a set down to beat third seeds Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori in the final 6-7(16), 7-6(5), 6-3 in just over three hours.
Patten is the third British player to win the Australian Open men’s doubles title in the Open Era – joining Jamie Murray (2016) and Joe Salisbury (2019).
The result has seen the 28-year-old Briton rise to a career-high world No.3.
Meanwhile, Alfie Hewett won his 10th Grand Slam singles title and second Australian Open trophy after an impressive run in Melbourne.
In his third final meeting with world No.1 Tokito Oda in the last three years, Hewett took the title with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
It’s his first victory over the 18-year-old Japanese star in their last six matches. The British No.1 finished the tournament without dropping a set.
Hewett also won the doubles title in Melbourne with British partner Gordon Reid – defeating Spain’s Daniel Caverzaschi and Stephane Houdet of France 6-2, 6-4 in the final.
This marked Hewett and Reid’s sixth successive Australian Open title and their 22nd Grand Slam together as a duo.
Andy Lapthorne completed the quartet of British champions at the Australian Open as he secured his eighth quad doubles title in Melbourne.
Lapthorne and Dutch star Sam Schroder beat top seeds Niels Vink and Guy Sasson 6-1, 6-4 in the final to bag their first trophy together. The 34-year-old Briton now has 18 Grand Slams to his name.
