Day 10: Nicholls and Mihilakova fall short in quarter-finals
Olivia Nicholls and Czech doubles partner Tereza have bowed out in the quarter-finals of the China Open after being defeated by Chan Hao-ching and Veronika Kudermetova 7-6(5), 6-3.
The British, Czech duo narrowly missed out in the opening set tie-break before bouncing back to clinch an early break in the second to edge a 3-1 lead.
However, Hao-ching and Kudermetova soon found another gear as they looked to turn the set on its head. The seventh seeds held to 30 on their following service game before reeling off the next four games to steal the set and secure their spot in the semi-finals.
British doubles No.1 Olivia Nicholls has continued her winning form at the China Open after she and Czech star Tereza Mihilakova reached the quarter-final of the WTA 1000 event.
Nicholls and Mihilakova produced their best performance of the tournament so far as they knocked out top seeds Erin Routliffe and Gabriela Dabrowski 7-6(5), 3-6, 11-9 in just under two hours.
After the British, Czech duo edged a tight opening set in the tie-break, the top seeds produced the perfect response as they looked to ramp up the attack on their opponents serve - ultimately clinching the decisive break to draw level.
Nicholls and Mihilakova edged an early lead in the match-deciding tie-break and caught a glimpse of their first match point at 9-7. The Kiwi, Canadian pair threatened to cause a late upset but Nicholls and Mihilakova held firm before eventually seeing out the win on their third match point.
They'll next face Chan Hao-ching and Veronika Kudermetova for a spot in the semi-finals.
Katie Boulter's journey to a maiden WTA 1000 title has come to an end in the third round after the Brit was beaten by world No.6 Coco Gauff, 7-5, 6-2.
The one hour 25 minute match saw Boulter test the former US Open champion in a tight opening set. After the American pulled ahead to a 5-2 lead, the British No.1 battled back thanks to some solid serving to eventually draw back level.
With Boulter stepping up to take the set to a tie-break, she remained calm and composed as she batted away two set points. However, a costly double fault from the Brit gifted Gauff a third chance to close it out, which she easily capitalised on.
Into the second and the fourth seed made a confident start, breaking Boulter in the fourth game before going on to secure the victory on her second match point.
The women's doubles draw is underway at the China Open, with British doubles No.1 Olivia Nicholls getting off to a winning start in Beijing.
Nicholls and her partner Tereza Mihalikova made a strong statement after they defeated US Open runner-up and singles world No.3 Jessica Pegula and Asia Muhammad 6-2, 7-5 in their opening round match.
After breaking the all-American duo three times to take the opening set, Nicholls and Mihalikova were soon put under pressure in the second. The British, Czech duo recovered from a break down twice before reeling off the last three games to secure their spot in the next round.
There, they will take on either top seeds Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe or Su-Wei Hsieh and Xinyu Wang.
Katie Boulter kick-started her China Open campaign with an impressive victory over world No.52 Taylor Townsend to reach the round of 32.
The British No.1 needed just an hour and 35 minutes to claim victory as she wrapped up a 6-4, 6-4 win over this year Wimbledon doubles' champion.
Boulter looked to make a fast start, as she found herself with three break points in the opening service game of the match. However, Townsend held her nerve to save all three before going on to immediately break the Brit to take the lead.
The three-time WTA titleholder was gifted more opportunities to claw back level. Having let three further break points come and go and 3-4, Boulter eventually capitalised on a fourth chance to break back before reeling off three consecutive games to take the set.
The 26th seed continued to apply the pressure throughout the second set, eventually finding her breakthrough at 5-4 before sealing victory with a blistering forehand winner.
Her victory now sees her set up a potential blockbuster clash against Coco Gauff in the next round should the American beat France's Clara Burel in their first match.
British No.3 Harriet Dart has bowed out in the opening round the China Open after she came out on the losing side of a three-set battle against Denmark's Clara Tauson, in 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 victory in two hours and 45 minutes.
After saving nine break points on her way to taking a one set lead, Dart looked to be firing as she raced ahead to a 4-1 victory. However, the Danish world No.72 soon sparked alight in a desperate attempt to turn things around.
Tauson went on to win 11 of the next 12 games to secure one of the best comeback victories of her career and book her spot in the second round.
Despite the disappointment for Dart, she'll be back in doubles action on Friday where she's set to compete alongside American Ashlyn Krueger.
