This weekend saw British players claim wins across the board at LTA Padel British Tour at Surge Padel, Harrogate.
There was British success across the men’s and women’s competitions with Alfonso Patacho and Chris Salisbury lifting the title in the men’s, and Victoria Nicholas and Catherine Rose succeeding in the women’s.
The competition in Yorkshire was the first of six LTA Grade 1 events to take place across England, Scotland, and the Channel Islands as part of the British Tour, which encompasses the top padel competitions in the UK.
Grade 1 events see the very best British players and international competitors competing in standout events, across full weekends, for prize money with acceptance onto British Tour events being based on players' LTA Padel Ranking.
In the men’s draw of 32, the final saw the second seeds Patacho and Salisbury defeat the top seeds, Sam Jones and Spain's Rafael Vega Otaolaurruchi in an exciting match that finished 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
After their win, Patacho said "We are very happy to have won the tournament with a tight final against two great players and friends. It was a great tournament, very well run by Home Of Padel (HOP), with a high quality of teams, that made it very difficult to get through every round. Thanks to everyone who made it possible."
In the women’s final, the top seeds, Nicholas and Rose comfortably overcame the second seeded pairing of Helen Crook and former five-time Wimbledon singles competitor Jo Ward 6-2, 6-1. Nicholas and Rose had an impressive tournament, failing to drop a set all weekend.
Reflecting on the win, Rose said, "We performed well, stayed focused and did what we needed to do well in the matches. We executed our game plans well throughout the tournament to take the win.
"For me and Vic, it was really nice to have a few matches back-to-back to play together and get some good match practice in, as that's what we wanted going forward as we are looking to play a few FIPs together.”
Javier Serrats, Tournament Organiser and Director said: "The adidas HOP Pro LTA Grade 1 event at Harrogate has been the opening of the season for us at the outstanding facilities of Surge Padel Harrogate, which has been hosting this tournament with us for 3 years already. Thanks to the LTA for the opportunity of hosting this event, Surge Padel for hosting, sponsors for making it possible, players, referees, helpers and spectators for making this first Grand event of the year a massive success."
