British doubles No.1 Olivia Nicholls and Slovakian partner Tereza Mihalikova finished runners-up in the women’s doubles at the BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells to USA’s Asia Muhammad and Netherlands’ Demi Schuurs.
Nicholls and Mahilkova had set points in the second set, but eventually lost 6-2, 7-6(4) in an hour and 44 minutes.
This was the first time that Nicholls and Mahilkova have reached a WTA 1000 final. It marks the fifth WTA final of Nicholls’s career and she’s currently up to world No.31 in the live rankings.
“This is my first time playing Indian Wells and our first time playing here together – we didn’t do too badly,” Nicholls said.
“We’ve been together since the grass court season last year and we’ve just been building and building. This is our first WTA 1000 final and hopefully there are many more to come.”

It was a nervy start to the match for both pairs, but Nicholls and Mihalikova couldn’t get anything going on serve. In a set where they won just one or eight points on the second serve, Muhammad and Schuurs broke four times to go one set in front after 37 minutes.
Nicholls and Mihalikova finally got a hold of serve at the start of the second set and went on to take a 3-1 lead after the Briton connected on a clean return winner.
However, the GB Billie Jean King Cup star wasn’t able to back it up in the next game on her own serve and then British, Slovakian duo went on to miss on two set points at 5-4.
The problems on serve surfaced again for Nicholls and Mihalikova in the tie-break. Despite overturning a double mini break of their own, they lost three points on their own serve before Muhammad closed out their victory with an ace.
