We have confirmed a three-strong quad wheelchair tennis team to represent Great Britain at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup European Qualification in Antalya, Turkey on 22-25 March.
Captained by the LTA's National Coach for Wheelchair Performance, Martyn Whait, the team includes:
- Greg Slade - World No.16, LTA Colour Holder No.313
- Richard Green - World No.31, LTA Colour Holder No.318
- Gary Cox - World No.53
Slade, 20, made his international debut for Great Britain in 2019 when he was selected for the junior team that won the silver medal at that year’s World Team Cup in Israel. He made his senior debut in the quad event, for players with a disability that affects three or more limbs, in 2021. He started 2023 in fine form, reaching his first ITF 2 quad singles final at last month’s Bolton Indoor tournament.
Green is a multiple quad singles National champion and made his Great Britain debut at the 2022 World Team Cup World Group event in Portugal, becoming the most recent wheelchair player to gain Colour Holder status. He reached a career-best world No.12 singles ranking in 2022 and enjoyed the biggest win of his career when beating the USA’s Bryan Barten to reach the quarter-finals of the British Open.
Cox is also a multiple National champion and has been selected to make his Great Britain debut in Antalya after the best season of his career in 2022, when he won his first international title at the LTA’s Abingdon Futures tournament. He ended last year by winning his third quad singles National title and also added the quad doubles title. Should he play in Antalya, Cox will earn LTA Colour Holder status.
What is the World Team Cup?
The World Team Cup is the wheelchair tennis equivalent of the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup. The event is the ITF’s flagship wheelchair tennis team event, with players competing for their country to become world team champions across four divisions – men’s, women’s, quads and juniors.
Great Britain's men’s, women's and junior teams have already secured their places in the World Group event in Portugal in May as a result of their performances at the 2022 event. However, with Great Britain finishing seventh in the quad event last year and missing automatic entry by one place for 2023 , the quad team needs to progress through qualification this year if they are to join the other three teams in Portugal in May.
Great Britain has a long history of success at the World Team Cup, with Great Britain quad teams having won the World Team Cup quad title on five occasions, most recently in 2017 in Sardinia, Italy.
The 2023 BNP Paribas World Team Cup World Group will be held in Vilamoura, Portugal from 1-7 May.
Who will Great Britain play in Antalya?
Great Britain’s quad team will be one of four teams in Antalya bidding to qualify for the quad event at the World Team Cup World Group in Portugal in May.
Great Britain, Germany, Italy and host nation Turkey will all play each other in a four-way round-robin competition, with the winners going forward to be part of the eight-team event in Portugal.
