Wimbledon 2024: Harriet Dart reflects on third round ‘opportunity’ after defeat to Xinyu Wang
• 1 MINUTE READ
Harriet Dart saw her third round match against Xinyu Wang as an opportunity missed after the British No.2 lost to the world No.42 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 in two hours and 23 minutes.
Dart equalled her career best Grand Slam result in reaching the round of 32 at Wimbledon this year after knocking out Katie Boulter in the second round but the Brit left slightly disappointed having been in good positions to win the match.
“it was a huge opportunity today,” Dart said. “I put myself in some situations where I was up and leading. It was really tough. I mean, to be up in two sets and come away with a loss is pretty heartbreaking, to be honest.
“I played some good tennis at times. But the wind was really difficult to deal with. But she also played some good tennis at times.”
After taking the opening set, Dart had break leads early in both the second and third, but Wang kept finding a way to fight back into the match.
Battling the conditions as well as her opponent, Dart lost the last six games of the match as the Chinese star booked her place in the fourth round.
Despite the result, there are plenty of positives for Dart to take away from another solid week at a major tournament.
“I feel like I've been playing some good tennis in the last few weeks and I've put myself in a position where I've been getting some good results. I really believed I could do some damage here.
“To lose today, being up twice, is going to sting for quite a while, but this is tennis. Every week you're dealing with losses. Just have to find a way through it.
“I still have another match to play. I've got mixed doubles, which I'm excited for. I'll do my very best there.”
