US Open 2024: Jan Choinski comes through qualifying to set up main draw debut
• 2 MINUTE READ
28-year-old Jan Choinski was the only Brit to come through qualifying at the 2024 US Open, saving three match points to defeat USA’s Maxime Cressy and book his main draw debut in Flushing Meadows.
However, Billy Harris, Sonay Kartal and Lily Miyazaki all lost in the final round of qualifying.
Choinski beat Cressy 6-0, 6-7(5), 7-6(12-10) in two hours and 32 minutes to join Jack Draper and Dan Evans as one of three Brits in the US Open men’s singles main draw.
The Brit got off to an electric start – wrapping up the opening set in just 24 minutes – but the big-serving American burst into life in the second.
Having levelled up the score at one set apiece, Cressy led from the front in the decider. The world No.162 took a break lead at 2-1 and then again at 6-5 with the chance to serve out the match, but on both occasions, Choinski fired straight back to stay in the match.
In the third set match tie-break Cressy once again got off to a strong start – racing to a 6-3 lead and then again found two aces to set up his third match point at 10-9.
The American couldn’t convert, making a crucial error in a big spot and leaving the door wide open for Choinski. The 28-year-old found a forehand winner down the line, before Cressy mis-judged a ball on the Brit’s match point to wrap-up a huge win in Choinski's career.
He will play Spaniard and world No.54 Roberto Carballes Baena in the first round of the main draw.
Elsewhere, Harris and Kartal both exited after taking one set leads in their final qualifying match.
Harris eventually lost to Kazakhstan’s Timofey Skatov 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, while Kartal was defeated by Ukraine’s Yulia Starodubtseva 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Finally, Britain’s Miyazaki was knocked out by ninth seed Eva Lys 6-1, 6-2.
