US Open 2024: Jack Draper takes down Alex de Minaur to book a spot in the semi-final

• 1 MINUTE READ

Jack Draper is into the US Open semi-final after an impressive straight sets win over 10th seed Alex de Minaur in his first match on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Draper defeated the Australian 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 to reach his first Grand Slam semi-final having not lost a set in his opening five matches.

He becomes only the eighth British man to reach the final four of a Grand Slam and only the fourth to do so at Flushing Meadows – joining Greg Rusedski (1997), Tim Henman (2004) and Andy Murray (2008, 2011 & 2012).

A fourth career win over a top 10 player means the Draper moves just one match away from a spot in Grand Slam final.

"It’s amazing," Draper said. "Honestly to be out here first match on, on the biggest court in the world, it’s a dream come true for me.

"I think I played a solid match. I feel the best fitness wise that I have in a long, long time and I think that’s where Alex has got me in the past.

"I also think he was maybe struggling a bit today with something which may have helped me a little bit but credit to Alex, he’s an unbelievable fighter and player. We’re going to have many more battles to come."

In the semi-finals he’s set to face the winner of world No.1 Jannik Sinner against 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev.

"I’m a big sports fan and a big tennis fan so I’ll definitely watch the match if it doesn’t go too late," he said. "I’ll just enjoy the win and relax."

The win means that Draper currently moves up to world No.20 in the live ATP rankings and could be set to become the ninth British man to break the top 20 in the Open Era.

Like in the previous round, Draper came into the match having lost each of his three previous meetings with his opponent, but it was De Minaur who looked off his game at the start of the match.

The Australian seemed to be struggling again with a hip injury that put him out of the quarter-finals at Wimbledon as well and Draper took advantage. He broke on both of De Minaur’s first service games and lost just one point on his first serve to see out the opener.

There were concerns for the 22-year-old after he called for the physio to have some heavy strapping at a break up in the second and for while it seemed De Minaur had a window back into the contest.

From 5-2 down, the world No.10 kicked into life out of nowhere to level at 5-5, but Draper’s quality showed once again in his toughest moment of the match. At perhaps his lowest point in the match, he broke straight back to eventually take the set, which proved a killer blow for the Aussie.

It seemed only a matter of time before he would make his move in the third set and at 2-2 a couple of errors from De Minaur set the Brit up to launch ahead with a monster forehand winner.

Once the British star shrugged off another break point it was the nail in the coffin for De Minaur and Draper completed a run of five straight games.
