US Open 2022: Record-equalling five Brits into second round
• 2 MINUTE READ
Just two days into main draw action at the US Open and the Brits are already making history as five players reach the singles second rounds – the joint most since they introduced 128 player draws (joint with 1987 and 2020).
Of the seven Brits coming into the US Open – including five men for the first time 47 years – Cam Norrie, Dan Evans, Andy Murray, Jack Draper and Harriet Dart all bagged opening round wins.
Second round draw
- Harriet Dart (GBR, world No.88) vs Dalma Galfi (HUN, world No.91)
- Cam Norrie (GBR, world No.9) vs Joao Sousa (POR, world No.59)
- Dan Evans (GBR, world No.22) vs James Duckworth (AUS, world No.83)
- Andy Murray (GBR, world No.51) vs Emilio Nava (USA, world No.203)
- Jack Draper (GBR, world No.53) vs Felix Auger-Aliassime (CAN, world No.8)
British No.2 Dart stole the headlines on day one after she knocked out world No.9 and Granby Championships champion Daria Kasatkina, coming back from a break down in the deciding set to seal the biggest win of her career.
Dart – who broke into the top 100 earlier this year and is supported by the Pro Scholarship Programme – now faces Hungary’s Dalma Galfi after becoming the first British woman to pick up a top 10 win in Flushing Meadows since Johnna Konta.
The seeds kept falling for the Brits as 2012 champion Murray took out the world No.27 Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets, with Murray the first of four British men into round two.
He’s joined by seventh seed and Wimbledon semi-finalist Norrie, who began his campaign for his first Grand Slam title with a straight-forward 6-0, 7-6(1), 6-0 win over France’s Benoit Paire.
Evans made no mistake in his first round clash with Jiri Vesley, dominating the world No.68 to take a 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 win, setting up an enticing second round match against James Duckworth.
Last but not least, rising British star Draper dazzled on the first day to knock out Finland’s Emiil Ruusuvouri – ranking just four spots above the Brit. Also supported by the Pro Scholarship Programme, Draper took a 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 to book a place in the second round, where he’ll take on sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime.
