100th anniversary of the Wightman Cup

• 1 MINUTE READ

At 11:00 on Saturday 29 June the Rothesay International in Eastbourne will play host to the 100th anniversary of the Wightman Cup, the GB v USA ladies tennis event, which ran annually from 1923 to 1989, apart from the War years.

In a bonus for the Centre Court ticket-holders at Devonshire Park, they will see the British pair of Emily Appleton and Lissey Barnett face off against Americans Fiona Crawley and Alana Smith in a One Set Shootout.

The Wightman Cup was first played in GB in 1924, at the All England Club, with GB chalking up its first triumph.  However, by 1989, the Americans led the series 51-10, and such dominance also led to the Wightman Cup being “suspended” by the two countries in February 1990.

Caroline Lacy, LTA’s Head of Tennis Relations and Event Development, commented: “Eastbourne is the perfect place to celebrate this slice of tennis history.  And it’s fitting that, by chance, the combined ages of the four players is exactly 100.”
