Roland Garros 2024: Skupski and Krawczyk earn place in mixed doubles final
• 2 MINUTE READ
Great Britain’s Neal Skupski and America’s Desirae Krawczyk are through to their first Roland Garros mixed doubles semi-final after overcoming the reigning Australian Open champions, Hsieh Su-wei and Jan Zielinski 6-1, 6(2)-7, 10-4.
The transatlantic duo are familiar with the momentous occasion of playing in a major final, having lifted successive Wimbledon mixed doubles titles – both in 2021 and 2022.
However, Skupski and Krawczyk are yet to add a major title outside of the Championships to their impressive list of accolades since joining forces in 2021.
The British, American partnership successfully reached the final of the Australian Open this season, narrowly missing out to Hsieh and Zielinski on what would have been their third major mixed doubles title.
Today they were able to avenge their defeat to 38-year-old Hsieh and 27-year-old Zielinski, refusing to suffer the same fate on the clay as they ousted their old rivals in a three-set thriller to reach their fourth Grand Slam final.
The chasm between the two opposing sides laid bare in the opening set as Skupski and Krawczyk got off to a blistering start.
Quickly settling into the match, the pair won five consecutive games before seizing the scoreboard advantage.
Hsieh and Zielinksi, who began to show visible signs of frustration, dug their heels in to stay on serve in the second, winning 78% of points on their first serve compared to their 58% in the opening set.
An eventual tie-break in the favour of the Taiwanese, Polish duo called for a decider, but Skupski and Krawczyk seized every opportunity to break away and clinch the victory in one hour and 38 minutes.
The fourth seeds will be back in action tomorrow as they go head-to-head with the victor of the semi-final between Ulrikke Eikeri and Maximo Gonzalez and Laura Siegemund and Edouard Roger-Vasselin.
