Murray to meet Wawrinka in first round
• 2 MINUTE READ
Andy Murray will face Stan Wawrinka in a blockbuster first round match at the French Open, it was confirmed today.
In what is a repeat of the 2016 and 2017 French Open semi-finals, the pair are set for another clash on clay at Roland Garros in what is the highlight of the opening ties at this year’s event.
British Number 1 Dan Evans also faces stiff competition in the first round, with the 30-year-old drawn against former World No.4 Kei Nishikori.
Cameron Norrie is up against a qualifier while Liam Broady, who will make his French Open debut this year, will be placed in the draw when all of the qualifiers have taken place.
Kyle Edmund was forced to withdraw from this year’s tournament through injury.
In the women’s singles draw Johanna Konta will take on 16-year-old rising star Cori Gauff in the opening round of the French Open in another epic encounter.
The British Number 1 has never faced the American player, who hit headlines at Wimbledon last year when she knocked out her idol Venus Williams en route to reaching the fourth round of the Grand Slam aged just 15.
Gauff has since gone on to win a WTA title and break into the world’s top 50 and will prove to be a tough match for Konta, the World No.13.
Elsewhere in the women’s singles draw Heather Watson will go up against Belgium’s Fiona Ferro in round one.
