2024 Paris Olympics: Andy Murray and Dan Evans reach doubles quarter-finals following dramatic victory

• 3 MINUTE READ

Andy Murray and Dan Evans have reached the quarter-finalist after claiming another sensational win in Paris to keep Murray's career, and hopes of one final Olympic medal, firmly alive.

The British duo battled past Belgium’s Joran Vliegen and Sander Gille 6-3, 6-7(8), 11-9.

The Brits were forced to save two match points before eventually securing victory of their own at the third time of asking, booking their spot in the quarter-finals after two hours and six minutes of play.

They will now go on to face either American third seeds Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul or Dutch duo’ Robert Haase and Jean-Julien Rojer for a spot in the semi-final, as Murray looks to complete a fairytale ending in the final chapter of his career.

"What happened again was incredible," Evans said. "We're getting really close to doing something pretty special. We played great tonight and people can see how good we've been in tight moments - we're getting better and better.

The British team made a slow start to their opening round match against Japan’s Kei Nishikori and Taro Daniel, with the pair fighting back from the brink of defeat to pull off an epic comeback win.

"We played good tennis today, it wasn't like the last match where we were a bit off and played good in parts, I thought we were unlucky not to win 7-6 in the second set.

"I don't think he (Murray) wants to go home does he?" Evans joked. "He's amazing to play with, it's an amazing atmosphere. To be a part of this is amazing regardless of what's happening and I'm over the moon."

"The first match was obviously quite different to today," Murray added. "We really didn't play well in the first round, were very lucky and today was the opposite. I served way better than I did on the first day and we deserved to win today.

"It's unbelievably emotional," he said, speaking on reaching an Olympic quarter-final. "You're obviously unbeliveably happy and then for whatever reason, you've got happy tears I don't know why that's the case.

"I was really emotional at the end of the match - extremely happy, excited that we managed to get through with another amazing finish. It takes a lot out of you so I'm glad we get a day off tomorrow."

Having come so close to an opening round exit, Murray and Evans knew they needed to up their level against Vliegen and Gille, with today’s start proving to be the complete opposite.

The Brits were first out of the blocks, securing a break on the Belgians opening service game as Evans lifted an inch-perfect lob before Murray consolidated with a hold to 30. From then on, the Belgians raced through their service games but failed to apply much pressure on the British serve, as Evans closed out a convincing opening set.

The Brits continued to find rhythm behind their service games, dropping just three points on serve in the second set.

With the scoreboard tied neck-and-neck, a solid service game from Murray saw us head towards a nail-biting tie-break. The Brits found two mini-breaks early on, but a pair of costly double-faults saw them gift the advantage straight back to the Belgians.

With two match points having come and gone for Team GB, the Belgians seized their opportunity – edging their nose in front to gain a 9-8 lead before another crucial double fault from the British No.2 handed them a set to take us to another match tie-break.

Both teams struggled behind serve, with 11 breaks of serve lining the 10 point tie-break. With the Brits’ fate resting on a knife’s edge and their opponents’ conjuring up a second match point, Evan smashed a return back into Vliegen who launched a return long to shift the match point in favour of Great Britain.

In a fitting end to another rollercoaster match, two-time Olympic gold medallist Murray struck another magnificent serve over the net before Evans smashed a return to seal the victory and their spot in the quarter-finals.

With the fighting spirit and determination of this British pairing, it’s say to say anything is possible.
