Day eight: Goffin wins first grass court title; Marino lifts second W100 title
David Goffin and Rebecca Marino are this year's Lexus Ilkley Trophy singles champions.
Former world No.7 Goffin wasted no time in defeating 22-year-old Harold Mayot 6-4, 6-2 to clinch his first grass court title.
33-year-old Goffin lost just three points on serve in the second set to clinch the 21st singles trophy of his career.
Canadian Marino was crowned the women's singles champion after defeating France's Jessika Ponchet 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in an hour and 35 minutes.
This is the 33-year-old's second career W100 singles trophy - the other coming earlier in the season at Irapuato.
Marino only lost nine points in the second set and served out the decider in convincing fashion to see out her first grass court title.
Recent results
The women’s W100 Ilkley final has been confirmed after unseeded players Rebecca Marino and Jessika Ponchet secured respective wins.
Canadia's Marino fought hard to earn her place in the final after battling past Kimberly Birrell 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. On Saturday Marino will bid to clinch her second W100 title of the year and her career, after she captured the W100 Irapuato crown back in February.
However, she faces a tough challenge in world No.143 Ponchet, who also came out on the winning side of a three-set epic against Elsa Jacquemot, winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 after one hour and 49 minutes of play. Frenchwoman Ponchet will be bidding to claim the biggest title of her career so far when she steps onto court to face Marino.
Ponchet, ranked world No.143, and Marino,144, met for the first time in the second round of the 2024 Australian Open qualifiers, in which ended in a 2-1 victory for the Canadian but with a title on the line, could the outcome be different during Saturday's final?
David Goffin and Harold Mayot will face off in a bid to be crowned Lexus Ilkley Trophy champion after prevailing in their semi-final battles.
Fourth seeded Goffin and Zachary Zvajda fought toe-to-toe in a two hour and 20 minute marathon match, with the Belgian coming through 7-5, 6-7(3), 6-3.
Former world No.7 Goffin caught a hold of a crucial break in the opening set before consiladating to take a one set lead. World No.127 Zvajda, who recently defeated British No.3 Dan Evans in three sets at the Lexus Surbiton Trophy, fought back in the second set tie-break to level the scoreboard.
However, Goffin soon re-found his stride to seal an early break of serve in the deciding set before wrapping up the win on his first match point.
Meanwhile, Mayot took on his fellow Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi, with the former pulling off a comeback win to progress to the final, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Sonay Kartal and Ella McDonald lost out in the quarter-finals of the Lexus Ilkley Trophy as the Brits had to play two matches on a busy day in West Yorkshire.
Meanwhile, Charles Broom, Ranah Stoiber and Amarni Banks bowed out in the second round earlier in the day.
Kartal – who is supported by our Pro Scholarship Programme presented by Lexus – defeated fellow Brit Lily Miyazaki in straight sets in the second round, but lost out to Australia’s Kimberly Birrell 7-6(4), 7-5 in the quarter-finals.
The Briton was going in search of back-to-back semi-finals in Ilkley, but Rothesay Open Nottingham quarter-finalist Birrell had the quality to edge the decisive moments of the match and closed out the two set win in two hours and 20 minutes.
Birrell moves on to face former Birmingham quarter-finalist Rebecca Marino in the final four. Marino battled past Stoiber 6-1, 7-6(0) before beating former Wimbledon girls’ singles champion Daria Snigur.
Meanwhile, 18-year-old McDonald reached her first W100 quarter-final earlier in the day with a 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-1 win over Lanalana Taraudee.
However, the young Brit was denied a semi-final spot – losing out to the experienced Jessika Ponchet 7-5, 6-1.
The French star also knocked out 21-year-old Brit Banks earlier in the day 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. She’ll play Elsa Jacquemot for a place in the final after she knocked out Marina Stakusic 6-4, 7-6(3) in the last match of the day.
The men’s semi-finals will see former top 10 star David Goffin play Zachary Svajda, while France’s Hugo Mayot and Benjamin Bonzi will face off.
Goffin defeated Terence Atmane 6-3, 6-4 in the quarter-finals to book his place in the semis. Seventh seed Svajda knocked out Broom at the start of the day and closed out another three-set win over Lukas Klein 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
Mayot got the shock result of the day, knocking out second seed and Lexus Surbiton Trophy champion Lloyd Harris 6-3, 6-2, while Bonzi beat 23-year-old Titoua Droguet 7-6(5), 6-4.
In-form Broom was defeated by Svajda earlier in the day 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 44 minutes.
More wins for the Brits on day five in Ilkley as Charles Broom continued his impressive form on grass, while rising stars Amarni Banks, Ella McDonald and Ranah Stoiber clinched victories.
The Rothesay Open Nottingham runner-up Broom picked up a quality first round win over former world No.39 Mikhail Kukushkin 7-6(2), 6-1.
The 26-year-old is having a brilliant season on the grass so far and broke the Kazakh three times in the second set to book a match-up against seventh seed Zachary Svajda.
However, Ryan Peniston bowed out in the opening round against Lukas Klein 6-3, 6-4 as the Brit continues his return from long-term injury.
In other results, qualifier Tomas Barrios Vera knocked out top seed Hugo Gaston 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 6-3 with Benjamin Bonzi and Stefano Napolitano also advancing.
However, in on of th few second round matches today, Arthur Fery lost out to second seed Lloyd Harris 6-4, 7-6(5) in an hour and 39 minutes.
Harris has been one of the form players of the grass court season so far having already lifted the title at the Lexus Surbiton Trophy. He'll play either Richard Gasquet or Hugo Mayot in the quarter-finals.
Women's draw: Banks, McDonald & Stoiber through to second round
21-year-old Banks produced arguably the result of the tournament so far as she knocked out second seed and world No.111 Mai Hontama 6-1, 6-2 in just 57 minutes.
The young Brit broke at the first opportunity in both sets as she marched to her first win of the grass this season. She’ll face France’s Jessika Ponchet in the second round.
That was quickly followed by qualifier McDonald defeating seventh seed Arianne Hartono 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-2 in over two hours.
McDonald - who is supported by the Pro Scholarship Programme presented by Lexus - will play world No.200 Lanlana Tararudee in the next round. Tararudee beat 16-year-old Brit Mimi Xu 6-1, 6-4 in the first round.
This was only Xu's first grass court match of the season. It was confirmed earlier today that the 18U Lexus Junior National Champion will have a wild card into Wimbledon qualifying this year.
Stoiber produced an epic comeback win against Slovakian Renata Jamrichova 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(5) to book a second round clash with world No.144 Rebecca Marino.
The 19-year-old is a former Junior Australian Open semi-finalist, and also made the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and US Open. She made the second round in Ilkley back in 2022.
Elsewhere, Ukraine's Daria Snigur, French stars Harmony Tan and Elsa Jacquemot, and Maya Joint all booked their place in the second round.
Arthur Fery, Lily Miyazaki and Sonay Kartal made winning starts to the day at the Lexus Ilkley Trophy before rain cancelled play throughout the afternoon.
21-year-old was the first British player through to the second round of the ATP Challenger draw after the young Brit defeated world No.136 Duje Ajdukovic 6-4, 7-6(2).
Fery proved clinical in the biggest moments to seal his first grass court main draw win of the season. He clinched the first an only break of the match on the final game of the opening set and won all points on serve in a dominant tie-break.
In the next round, he'll take on second seed and Lexus Surbiton Trophy champion Lloyd Harris.
Women's draw: Miyazaki seals incredible comeback
Britain's Miyazaki and Kartal will face each other in the second round after both put in impressive displays to win their first round matches.
Eighth seed Miyazaki showed nerves of steel to clinch a 2-6, 7-6(7), 7-6(3) win over Romania's Elena Gabriela Ruse.
The 28-year-old Brit came back from a break down twice in the deciding set to go on seal her first main draw win on grass this season in two hours and 49 minutes.
Meanwhile, Kartal knocked out Australian Destanee Aiava 6-3, 7-6(4) to mark her return to Ilkley, where she reached the semi-final last season.
Kartal has won all three of her previous meetings with Miyazaki - including match-ups in Surbiton and Ilkley back in 2022.
However, 15-year-old Hannah Klugman lost against third seed Chloe Paquet 6-2, 7-6(6).
It was another rain disrupted day at the Lexus Ilkley Trophy as play was forced to move indoor courts.
In the men's draw, British wild card Felix Gill fell short in a tricky three-set match against Switzerland's Dominic Stricker, eventually losing out 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-1 in the round of 32.
Gill did well to recover from a one set deficit as he fought back in the second set tie-break - winning four points in a row to force a decider. However, the Swiss star, who holds a career-high ranking of world No.88, proved too powerful for Gill to break down - as Stricker capitalised on three out of the five break point opportunities he was presented with in the third to move into the second round.
Over in the women's draw, two British hopeful's journies to the main draw continued with rising youngsters Ella McDonald and Ranah Stoiber winning their first qualifying matches.
McDonald enjoyed a straightforward match against Nigina Abduraimova, 6-2, 6-4, while Stoiber came out on the winning side of a three-set marathon against Talia Bibson, eventually prevailing 5-7, 7-6(1), 6-4 to reach the final round of qualifying.
However, Lauryn John-Baptiste narrowly last out in her qualifying match to Maya Joint 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, while Naiktha Bains was defeated by Mariam Bolkvadze 7-5, 7-6(4).
Three Brits exit the tournament as wildcards Aidan McHugh, George Loffhagen and Jay Clarke suffer defeat on day two of qualifying.
McHugh, ranked 365, lost 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 to France’s Hugo Grenier in a battle to secure a place in the main draw.
The Briton quickly took a commanding position, winning five consecutive games to seize the first set.
But after failing to capitalise on five break points in the second, momentum began to swing in the favour of the Frenchman as he surged ahead in the second and third sets to seal the win in two hours.
Meanwhile, Clarke lost out 6-3, 7-5 to seeded qualifier Benjamin Bonzi.
Clarke pressed to keep himself in the match after trailing a set, threatening to be the first to break but Bonzi proved too strong. The world No.172 consolidated his strong hold with a last-minute solitary break that would gift him the match after one hour and 35 minutes of play.
Loffhagen would also suffer a straight-sets defeat, losing 6-3, 6-2 to America’s Denis Kudla.
The first day of qulifying at the Lexus Ilkley Trophy had to move indoors as rain stopped play on the grass.
After shifting surfaces, British teenager and 18U Lexus Junior Nationals Championships lost to world No.155 Tomas Barrios Vera 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in the opening round of qualifying.
Playing in his first match at ATP Challenger level, Bonding made a strong account of himself against a highly ranked ATP player. The young Brit hit seven aces and saved five break points throughout the match, but the 26-year-old Chilean had the quality in the final set to see out the win in an hour and 57 minutes.
Elsewhere, Joris De Loore beat Damir Dzumhur 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 while Alejandro Moro Canas defeated Marc Polmans 7-6(7), 6-2.
