Stockport’s Liam Broady excited for ‘amazing’ Davis Cup to return to Manchester

Stockport tennis star Liam Broady is excited to once again see a major international tennis event in Manchester, with the Davis Cup returning to the AO Arena in September.
Broady, fresh from competing at Wimbledon, made a visit to St Malachy’s RC Primary School on Friday to take part in a tennis session with a group of pupils who have been inspired to play the sport after attending the Davis Cup last year.
The World Cup of Tennis returns to the AO Arena in Manchester from 10-15 September with the Lexus GB Davis Cup team set to take on Argentina, Canada and Finland for a place in the knockout stages in Malaga in November.
Davis Cup returned to Manchester in 2023 for the first time in 30 years and was not short of all the drama and action the competition is known for. Captain Leon Smith’s team, which included Sir Andy Murray, Jack Draper and Cam Norrie saw their bid to make the knockout stages of the competition go down to the wire with Dan Evans and Neal Skupski securing the victory in the final, winner-takes-all match against France, in front of a record 13,000 strong crowd.
Broady said: “Brilliant to have the Davis Cup in Manchester again, it was an amazing event last year with 13,000 people there on the final day with an incredible atmosphere. It will be even better this year and a great opportunity for people in the North West to enjoy one of the biggest tennis events on the planet.”
“Davis Cup is an amazing event, incredibly relaxed with musical instruments in the crowd and fans being able to get involved in chants – I’m so glad we’ve got it back in Manchester this year. I hope everyone that went last year and enjoyed it will be back again to show the love this year as well.”
Lifelong Manchester City fan Broady ticked an item off his bucket list at this year’s Wimbledon by meeting City boss Pep Guardiola and is relishing the success of fellow Stockport natives Phil Foden, Kobbie Mainoo and Cole Palmer who’ve starred in the England team at the Euros.
“Fred Perry was an 8-time Grand Slam champion from Portwood and now with these guys it gives me great pride in the area to show what people from Stockport can do, it’s fantastic.”
