Preview
After missing out on a spot at last year's Finals in Malaga, the Lexus GB team will be gunning to make a winning start on their return to Davis Cup action against Japan.
With British No.1 Jack Draper sitting out of this tie due to injury, we’re set to see a slightly different line-up this time out – as one rising Brit joins the team for the first time.
British No.3 Jacob Fearnley comes in as Britain's highest ranked player off the back of a breakthrough season last year and could be tipped to make his debut in Miki.
Following his run to a maiden ATP Challenger title in June at the Rothesay Open Nottingham, the 23-year-old Brit went on to clinch a further three before the end of the season to crack the world's top 100 for the first time - earning himself a well deserved maiden Davis Cup call-up.
Fearnley will enter the tournament in red hot form and brimming with confidence after reaching the third round at the Australian Open. During his stint Down Under, the 23-year-old defeated home favourite Nick Kyrgios and Arthur Cazaux before losing out to world No.2 and eventual runner-up Alexander Zverev in the third round.
Billy Harris has been called up to represent GB once again following his memorable debut during the Brits’ tie against Finland at the Group Stages in Manchester. The British No.4 stunned Otto Virtanen in a straight set victory to help guide his nation to a 2-1 win over the Finns.
Harris recently placed himself on the verge of making the Australian Open main draw but fell short in the final round of qualifying. With the 29-year-old looking to get back to the form that led him to the quarter-finals at the Queen’s Club and the final four in Eastbourne, GB's clash against Japan could be the perfect opportunity for Harris to jumpstart his new season.
Meanwhile, newly formed doubles duo Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury could prove one of the most important assets in upcoming tie against Japan. The all-British pair joined forces at the beginning of the season and will bring a wealth of experience to Smith's team. Meanwhile, Giles Hussey completes the British line-up.
While the Brits have fielded a strong team, the Japanese side aren't to be underestimated. Alongside having a home crowd behind them, Go Soeda has selected three top 120 singles players to join his team for the first round tie.
Leading the Japan team out is former world No.4 Kei Nishikori who has already picked up where he left off last season on the ATP tour. The 35-year-old rounded off 2024 with a victory at the Tali Open before finishing runner-up at the Hong Kong Open at the beginning of January.
When form and experience come together, they can be a formidable weapon. Few active players have earned more Davis Cup wins than Nishikori, who has racked up an astonishing 21-3 win record across 13 ties.
He'll be joined by Japan's highest ranked player and world No.67 Yoshihito Nishioka, who last year added a third ATP title to his name in Atalanta.
