Great Britain to face Japan in 2025 Davis Cup Qualifiers first round

• 1 MINUTE READ

Great Britain have drawn Japan in the 2025 Davis Cup Qualifiers first round, between 31 January - 2 February 2025.

Japan will have the choice of ground with the tie set to take place on either 31 January-1 February or 1-2 February. The winning team will then take on the winner of Germany vs Israel in the Qualifiers second round later in the year.

26 nations are set to compete in the Qualifiers first round – 14 teams who competed in the 2024 Davis Cup Finals Group Stages and the 12 winning nations from the 2024 World Group I ties. The winning teams from the Qualifiers first round will progress to the Qualifiers second round in September.

The Qualifiers first round ties will follow a best-of-five rubber format, with two singles matches being played on day one and a doubles match followed by two singles on day two.

Italy - who last week became the first nation to win back-to-back Davis Cup titles in over a decade - have received a wild card straight to the Final 8 as the host nation, while this year’s runners-up the Netherlands take the second wild card and will receive a BYE to the Qualifiers second round in September.

Great Britain come into the qualifiers having fallen short in the group stages of the 2024 Finals, after finishing third in their group with losses against Canada and Argentina.

Meanwhile, Japan booked their ticket to the 2025 Qualifiers after sealing a convincing 3-1 victory over Colomobia in World Group I in September.

The tie in February will mark the first meeting between Great Britain and Japan since 2016. Entering in off the back of a historic maiden Davis Cup title in 2015, the Brits went on to defeat Japan 3-1 on their way to the semi-finals the following year.

Their only other meeting came in 1931 which saw Great Britain win 5-0.
