Great Britain vs Finland Davis Cup head-to-head

The two nations share a rivalry that dates back to 1928, which saw Great Britain secured a dominant 5-0 victory. Since then, the Brits went on to win the next four meetings, including in 1933 - the year they lifted their sixth Davis Cup title.

However, with the two having not faced each other at the Davis Cup since 1989, and a strong Finland team reaching last year’s semi-finals – it’s safe to say the upcoming tie in Manchester will pose a different challenge than in previous years.

Britain's highest ranked player Jack Draper is a name on everyone's lips at the moment, after the 22-year-old captured the attention of the tennis world during his sensational run to the semi-finals at the US Open.

Draper will arrive in Manchester in red-hot form off the back of reaching a career-first Grand Slam semi-final – becoming only the eighth British man to reach the final four of a major tournament.

Prior to making the final four in New York, the British No.1 had also reached the quarter-finals at Cincinnati, and earlier won his first ATP tour-level title at the Boss Open in June, leaving him with plenty of confidence ahead of the upcoming ties.

Davis Cup stalwart Dan Evans also comes in hyped up to replicate the magic from last year’s Group Stages. Evans had a difficult start to the year but found his stride in New York where he defeated Karen Khachanov in an epic five-set battle that became the longest US Open match in history. Meanwhile, Billy Harris also joins the British team for the first time after clocking his highest ranking to date (101) and could be set to gain his Colour Holder status.

Lexus GB Davis Cup team captain Leon Smith will be spoilt for choice when it comes to doubles combinations in Manchester. Neal Skupski and Evans were a reliable duo last time out having won two of their three matches, including a memorable deciding doubles rubber against France to cement Great Britain's spot in Malaga.

However, this year will also welcome a fresh face in newly crowned Wimbledon men's doubles champion Henry Patten, who's received his first call up off the back of a standout season so far.

Patten's involvement could see an exciting match-up against Finnish doubles partner Harri Heliovaara - who he's captured three titles with so far this season - should they both be selected for the tie.

Heliovaara comes in as Finland's only doubles specialist. A long-standing addition to the Finnish team, the world No.15 has competed in 27 ties and knows exactly what it takes to win on the Davis Cup stage.

Heliovaara enters with a good record against British players, having won all five of his matches against Brits in 2024, and could be paired with any of the remaining Finnish team.

In terms of Finland's singles selections, Otto Virtanen is their highest ranked player and has built up a sturdy 9-5 win record for his country. The world No.110 was a crucial addition to last year's team, with the 23-year-old claiming victories over the likes of Botic van de Zandschulp, Mackenzie McDonald and Gabriel Diallo en route to the semi-finals.

That being said, Virtanen has never played against any of Great Britain's singles players on the ATP Tour and will make the singles matches a must-watch in the Brits' opening tie of the 2024 Group Stages.
