The 2024 cinch Championships got underway with a Fan Day in aid of the LTA Tennis Foundation on Sunday 16 June, with over 4000 spectators being treated to a jam-packed day full of tennis entertainment.
The cinch Championships Fan Day gifted fans the opportunity to watch an open practice session with reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz in action, before spectating three exhibition matches on Centre Court. With eight players taking part in the matches, they were split into two teams which were named after the LTA Tennisables - our fun and loveable characters which are here to help kids smash it at tennis.
Team Ace, captained by Judy Murray and Comedian Josh Berry was made up of three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray, Neal Skupski, Joe Salisbury and Frances Tiafoe, while Cam Norrie, 2023 Rothesay International Eastbourne champion Francisco Cerundolo, Mate Pavic and Marcelo Arevalo formed Team Bounce - led by former professional tennis player Annabel Croft and Bear Grylls.
The three exhibition matches each lasted 20 minutes and followed a simple format. A normal scoring system was used, with no advantage being played across any of the matches – once the countdown clock reached zero, the winner of the next point would win the game, regardless of the score.
The number of games won by each team after the 20 minutes was added to a leaderboard, with the team with the highest number of games clocked after the three matches being crowned the winners. Celebrity guests Bear Grylls and Josh Berry were also subbed in to play a few points during the doubles match.
After an hour of show-stopping tennis in front of a Centre Court crowd, Team Bounce were eventually crowned cinch Championship Fan Day winners, beating Team Ace 3-0.
Fan Day exhibition match results:
- Francisco Cerundolo beat Frances Tiafoe 4-3
- Cam Norrie beat Andy Murray 5-2
- Marcelo Arevalo & Mate Pavic beat Neal Skupski & Joe Salisbury 11-10
As well as raising awareness of the LTA Tennis Foundation’s mission to improve lives through tennis, and raise funds, the charity was able to offer some money can’t buy experiences to two of their charity Partners.
Representatives from The Queen’s Club Foundation and the Tim Henman Foundation each joined Team Bounce and Team Ace to support the captains and their players. Each participant was able to step onto centre court and take part in a coin toss to start the matches - a big moment for any child or young person. It was a moment to remember for two youngsters, who were given the special opportunity to warm up with British stars Murray and Norrie, ahead of their singles exhibition match.
The players were all generous with their time, posing for photos with both groups and making sure everyone had something signed as a memento for their day. Experiences like this will stay with children and young people for a lifetime.
Kate Maurici, Head of The Queen's Club Foundation said: “The kids had an utterly amazing day, thank you!”
The LTA Tennis Foundation’s ambition is that every child, young person and adult can have access to the unique and life-changing benefits that tennis offers. If you would like to support this live changing work, you can make a donation.
