Tennis Career
Konta won her fourth career title at the Viking Open Nottingham in June - becoming the first British woman to win a title on home soil for 40 years. She defeated Zhang Shuai in straight sets to lift the trophy.
Earlier in the year, she reached second round in Grippsland Trophy ahead of retiring in the first round of the Australian Open due to injury. Konta has made the second round in two WTA 1000s so far this year. In May she lost in the first round of Roland Garros to Sorana Cirstea.
Lost in the opening round of the Australian Open to Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur. Reached the SF of Monterrey (d. Clijsters en route) in March just before lockdown. Part of the winning British Bulldogs team at second Battle of the Brits event at the NTC in July. Returned to the Tour in Lexington (R1) and reached the SF of WTA Premier 5 Western & Southern Open without losing serve.
Put together best clay court season of her career, reaching the final of Estoril and Italian Open, and the SF at Roland Garros (d. previous year’s runner up Stephens) where she fell to Vondrousova. Also performed well at the next two majors: QF at both Wimbledon (d. Kvitova) and US Open (d. Pliskova) to become the only woman to reach the last eight or better at the year’s last three Grand Slams. Lead the GB Fed Cup team to victory in their group matches in Bath in February and victory over Kazakhstan in April to put Britain back into World Group for first time in 27 years. On pre-Wimbledon grass fell 2r Birmingham to Ostapenko and 3r Eastbourne to Jabeur; Finished season ranked No.11 in the world, a knee injury curtailing her year after the US Open.
Represented GB in the Olympic Games Rio 2016; Owns three WTA Tour titles – all at Premier or higher level: claiming both Sydney & Miami (2017) and Stanford (2016). A semifinalist at 2016 Australian Open, 2017 Wimbledon and 2019 Roland Garros; First cracked the world’s top 10 following her SF run in Beijing (with win over Keys) and the world’s Top 5 with Wimbledon SF run (reaching No.4 – the highest ranking by a British woman since Wade in 1978.
Started playing aged 8 at an afterschool programme in Sydney; moved to the UK aged 14, settling at Eastbourne.
