Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers 2025: Great Britain book Finals spot with wins over Germany & Netherlands

• 3 MINUTE READ

The Lexus GB Billie Jean King Cup team are through to the Finals in September after coming through Qualifiers against Germany and Netherlands.

The Brits - led by Katie Boulter, Sonay Kartal, Jodie Burrage, Harriet Dart and Olivia Nicholls - finished top of Group F after 2-1 victories over both Germany and Netherlands, finishing with a doubles decider in their final match.

The result means they will progress to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen, China from 16-21 September.

Reacting to another impressive outing for her team at the Billie Jean King Cup, Captain Anne Keothavong said: "It's brilliant - the consistency the team has brought in recent years, competing at the highest level in this competition.

“Last year there was a bit of disappointment - it was great to reach the semi-finals but equally it’s motivated us even more and this team is hungry for success, this competition means a lot for the british players and for me that’s a luxury in this position.

“All our female players should be celebrated. We’ve got the depth, there’s healthy competition and we’ve seen with all the most successful nations that you need that rivalry, not just at the top of the game but lower down and in the juniors as well you need competition. It drives them on.

“Come September we could have top 10, top 20 players. They’ve still got a lot of tennis to give, areas they need to work and improve on and I have no doubt they will. They’re all highly motivated individuals and when we arrive in Shenzhen we’ll be ready."

Great Britain got their qualifying campaign underway with a strong win against Germany – thanks to impressive singles performances from debutant Sonay Kartal and British No.1 Katie Boulter.

Kartal – who this week became LTA Colour Holder No.329 – showed excellent composure to beat Jule Niemeier 6-4, 6-2, before Boulter saw out the tie with a comeback victory against Tatjana Maria 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.

With Netherlands having defeated Germany in their opening tie, this then set up a group decider GB on Saturday against the home nation.

With the stakes higher than ever, Kartal once again proved her quality on the clay to clinch her second win in as many days over Eva Vedder 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to put the Brits just one match away from the Finals.

Netherlands weren’t going to go away easily. Suzan Lamens – who came into the tie on a 12-match winning streak in the competition – got the better of Boulter 6-4, 6-3 to bring the whole week down to one final rubber.

Keothavong opted for a late change to the line-up, electing to go with Boulter and Jodie Burrage up against Lamens and Demi Schuurs who were undefeated in eight matches together.

Despite their lack of doubles experience together, Boulter and Burrage showed up for their nation when it mattered most – sealing a 6-2, 6-2 win over the Dutch duo and with it, booking that flight to China this September.

Great Britain have now been to the Finals in three of the last four seasons and have reached the semi-finals on two separate occasions.

The Finals will be played out as a straight knock-out between eight teams. The teams who come through Qualifiers alongside defending champions Italy and host nation China will be drawn in the quarter-finals ahead of the event in September.
