Head-to-head
Great Britain and Australia have a long-standing history in the competition but haven’t faced each other for 41 years – the last time the Brits reached the semi-final.
On that day Sue Barker and Virginia Wade fought back from one match down to defeat the Australians and reach only the fourth final in their history.
However, Australia currently lead the head-to-head seven to three coming into their 11th encounter.
Preview
Great Britain’s fairy-tale win over Spain to reach the semi-finals will have left the team high in confidence as they head into the final four for the first time since 1981.
The Brits needed to win all three rubbers to progress and did just that, with Heather Watson, Harriet Dart, Alicia Barnett and Olivia Nicholls all producing stunning performances in straight sets victories.
However, Australia will represent a whole new challenge for the Brits – currently ranking top of the Billie Jean King Cup rankings and having also reached the semi-finals in 2021.
Top ranked player, Ajla Tomljanovic is unbeaten so far in Glasgow with victories over Anna Schmiedlova and Elise Mertens, coming off the back of a season where she reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and the US Open. It’s likely that Dart – who defeated world No.13 Paula Badosa on Thursday night – will line-up to face Tomljanovic for the third time in her career, with the Australian having won both previous meetings in three-set battles.
While captain Anne Keothavong will need to decide between Watson and Katie Boulter for the second singles player – Australia have stayed with a consistent team so far, with Storm Sanders taking the mantle in the singles without losing a set.
The ace in their team, Sanders has been a dominant force for the Aussies in both singles and doubles and came into the tournament as the world No.10 in the WTA doubles rankings. Recently she won her first WTA 1000 doubles event in Guadalajara alongside Brazilian Luisa Stefani.
It's likely that Sanders will play in two rubbers, which could prove costly if it comes don to the doubles decider against the in-form British duo of Barnett and Nicholls. The pair have gone undefeated in their first two doubles matches, winning big rubbers to keep the Brits in the competition.
