Match one: Raducanu leads Hruncakova after impressive first set

Emma Raducanu has got Great Britain off to a strong start against Slovakia, holding off a late comeback from Viktoria Hruncakova to take the set 6-4.

It was a nervy start from Hruncakova who mis-fired on a series of backhands to give Raducanu a break right from the off.

The British No.2 had to work hard to consolidate the break – seeing off three break points in a 10-minute game to stretch 2-0 in front, which helped her settle more into the rhythm we’ve seen all week.

Frustration started to kick in for Hruncakova, who has been unable to stamp her authority in the big rallies. A double fault from the Slovakian set up three break points again for the Brit, which she took at the first time of asking.

However, with Raducanu serving for the set at 5-2, Hruncakova loosened up on the forehand – finding three clinical winners to get her first break before a crucial hold of her own.

The Slovakian has been building momentum and the pressure was mounting on the Briton in the closing stages, but Raducanu did well to compose herself and serve out a big opening set in 50 minutes.
