Australian Open 2023: Draw sets up a tough first round for the Brits
• 2 MINUTE READ
The draw for the 2023 Australian Open singles events has thrown up some tough first round matches for several Brits - including rising star Jack Draper facing top seed Rafael Nadal.
Draper will take on reigning champion Nadal in a show-stopping, opening round match-up on Rod Laver Arena, coming off the back of an impressive run in Adelaide where he has just reached the semi-finals of the ATP 250 event.
In another exciting match-up, Andy Murray has been drawn to face 2022 cinch Championships winner Matteo Berrettini in the first round. This will be the fifth meeting between the two, with world No.14 Berrettini clinching a win on three occassions.
British No.1 Cam Norrie has been drawn wild card Luca Van Assche in the opening match, while Dan Evans faces world No.90 Facundo Bagnis.
Kyle Edmund - a semi-finalist at the Australian Open in 2018 - is another Brit who faces a tough first round challenge. Edmund has been pitted against 15th seed Jannik Sinner, who he recently faced for the first time in his career at the Adelaide International 1 and lost out 6-3, 6-2.
On the women's side, British No.1 Emma Raducanu has been handed an opener against Germany's Tamara Korpatsch. Should Raducanu advance, she could potentially face a much-anticipated second round match against seventh seed Coco Gauff.
Meanwhile, Harriet Dart has been dealt a tough hand in her maiden Australian Open main draw, as she faces Jil Teichmann.
