Australian Open 2025: Jacob Fearnley sets up third round clash against second seed Alexander Zverev
• 3 MINUTE READ
It might be his first time in the Australian Open main draw but Jacob Fearnley looks well at home in Melbourne as he pulled off a comeback win over fellow rising star Arthur Cazaux to reach the third round at the Australian Open.
The 23-year-old fought back from a set and a break down to defeat the world No.78 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 on court six at Melbourne Park.
This time last year, Fearnley was still studying at Texus Christian University in the United States, ranked at No.516 in the world. Now, the rising star has truly announced his arrival on one of the world's biggest stages.
Today's performance saw the Briton pick up where he left off in his opening battle against home favourite Nick Kyrgios as he booked his spot to the last 32 after ousting Cazaux in just under three hours.
"It feels amazing," Fearnley said when asked how it feels to reach the third round in Australia. "It was a tough match, really tough conditions but I'm super happy to be third round - I don't think it's sunk in yet."
The Frenchman made a fast start to the contest as he quickly claimed the first two games before the match was postponed for two hours due to a rain delay.
While the weather might've put a temporary dampner on the match, that didn't affect the spirits of a rowdy cluster of British support watching on from the sidelines.
Fearnley looked to turn things around when they returned but Cazaux proved too strong to break down as he rallied to a one set advantage.
A new set brought a clean slate for the British No.3, who managed to put a stop to his opponent's momentum who was well on his way to taking full control of the match. Fearnley fought toe-to-toe with the world No.78 and stayed patient before making his move at the last second to break for 7-5 and level proceedings.
All the momentum resting in his favour, the Rothesay Open champion worked his way through the gears. Fearnley tightened up on serve and won 100% of points behind his first in the third set to avoid any break points for the first time in the match.
Meanwhile, he found plenty of joy on the second serve return, claiming nine out of 10 points as he hunted the double break to move just one set away.
A seventh break of Cazaux's serve was all that was needed for Fearnley to take the reigns in the fourth. Stepping up to the baseline to serve for a spot in the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his young career, Fearnley fired a powerful backhand into the corner of court which Cazaux dumped into the net to become the first Brt to punch their ticket to the third round.
His reward? A meeting with world No.2 Alexander Zverev who will be fired-up at the prospect of lifting his first Grand Slam title.
While a blockbuster match-up in the third round is on the horizon, this isn't the first time Fearnley has had the opportunity to face one of the world's best players at a Slam.
On top of his meeting against Kyrgios today, last year's Wimbledon saw the Brit take on 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic on Centre Court where he managed to take one set off the Serbian.
For many players, occasions like these only come around once in a life time, so to be dealt another chance to step into the spotlight on one of the biggest courts isn't something Fearnley takes for granted.
"It's another massive match, I assume we'll be on a big court," Fearnley added when speaking about facing the second seed in the third round. "He's number two in the world and playing unbelievably. I'm aware that all of these matches I'm playing are extremely challenging.
"I do get nervous but I know how lucky I am to have these experiences and play these matches - they don't come around often so I'm trying to cherish them and stay in the present."
When is Jacob Fearnley playing next?
Jacob Fearnley and Alexander Zverev are expected to face each other on Friday 17 January - timings TBC.
